Just a Friend

"Marinette? Earth to Marinette!" 

Marinette blinked as Luka waved a slender hand in front of her face, the wisp of an amused smile lingering on his lips. 

"S—sorry!" Marinette stammered, tearing her gaze away from Adrien and Kagami. She couldn't help but keep replaying Adrien's words in her head. He and Kagami went on a date, and when he came back home late that night, Marinette couldn't help but notice that he was nearly glowing. A part of her was glad that he was moving on, but seeing the joy on his face seemed like a punch in the gut. 

"What were you saying?" Marinette asked, her voice soft, her attention already slipping back to Adrien and Kagami. She was only faintly aware of the slightest exhale of a sigh beside her. Not angry or upset, it seemed more exasperated and mildly amused with just the faintest tinge of heartbreak. 

"I think we should call off our date," Luka announced. That got Marinette's attention and her eyes snapped towards him.

"Why?" She asked, anxiousness seeping into her voice and causing her to wring her hands worriedly. "Did I do something wrong? I'm sorry if I did." 

"It's not that," Luka said gently, his eyes soft, his smile sweet. "You've done nothing wrong. And please don't take this the wrong way Marinette. I think you're an extraordinary girl, and I love you. Don't look alarmed!" He added, seeing the shock written all over her face. "I do. I really do. But I can see it plain as day that your heart belongs to someone else, and I think you should go after him." 

Marinette blinked as Luka's words sank in, her face then burst with furious heat. "It's not like that!" She protested. "Adrien, he's—he's just a friend." The words felt like poison, coating her mouth and throat and threatening to make her gag. Adrien was much more than a friend. Adrien was Chat Noir and Chat was the love of her life. Adrien...Chat...They were one and the same, and they were much more than "just a friend". 

But there was no other option. What Luka was suggesting was dangerous, even if he didn't know it. Marinette knew that she and Adrien had to stay together. For their safety, and the wellbeing of all the ones that they loved. 

Luka's smiled, so calm and without any blame or anger. But Marinette could see the pain, the heartbreak shining through his azure-blue eyes like light through cracked glass. Despite it all, his voice was still just as soft and warm. 

"Anyone with eyes could see how you two look at each other," Luka said. "He loves you too, so what are you scared of? Go on, tell him, ask him out." 

Marinette shook her head stubbornly. "I can't," she whispered, every word seemed to bring her closer and closer to tears. "We just can't." 

Luka regarded her, a little amused with a mix of confusion and soft melancholy. "I'm cancelling the date," he said with quiet firmness. "And I want you to ask him out. We'll still be friends, of course," he offered another one of his smiles that seemed to be able to light up any day. "But I want you to go after Adrien. He's the one you're in love with." 

Marinette wanted to protest, but the words were stuck in her throat like sap. There was also the gentle insistence in Luka's voice, that told her that nothing she could say would change his mind. 

She glanced at Adrien, who was talking to Kagami with an animated smile, his grass-green eyes shining with enthusiam as she raised a hand to her mouth and laughed. 

He loves you too, Luka had said. That might've been true once, but Marinette couldn't help but wonder as she took in the plain happiness on his face, was it still true now?

"I'm lost, Tikki," Marinette buried her face in her hands as she sank down into her bed. Luka's words had been playing in her head all day and she couldn't concentrate in class. "I still love Chat, I mean Adrien, but I can't. We can't." 

Tikki hovered before Marinette as she watched in despair at the anguish written all over her friend's face. Unfortunately, it wasn't the first time that Tikki had to go through this with an owner. Wielders of the cat and ladybug miraculous have always been drawn to each other, not only because they were the cat and the ladybug, but feelings were almost always bound to develop after working in such close partnership. 

"I really want to tell Adrien," Marinette sniffed. "But everytime I think about it, the thought of our friends and family aren't far behind." 

Tikki flew down to Marinette's lap and nestled in the cupped hands of her owner, knowing that it brought her comfort. "You know you can't, Marinette," Tikki whispered. "It pains me to see you this way, but Hawkmoth is just too dangerous." 

"Do you think that we would be possible after Hawkmoth is gone?" There was a spark of hope in Marinette's voice, one that brought Tikki as much joy as it did pain. 

"It is possible," Tikki mused. "But I don't think you should hold your breath, Marinette. I think you should try to move on. We don't know how long it'll be until Hawkmoth is defeated, and you don't have the luxury of letting your feelings interfere with your duty." 

Marinette winced, "You're right." She sighed. "I can't let my feelings interfere with my duty." 

She set Tikki onto the little cushion she had made her as a bed and turned off the lights. Rolling onto her back, Marinette stared into the darkness, and wished, not for the first time in her life, that she didn't have to uphold the heavy mantle of being Ladybug.

For me, I think it might be Frozer just cuz even tho I'm an Adrienette shipper, Marinette and Luka's relationship is adorable too 😶😆
