Chapter 2 「Masked Mother」PREVIEW

I haven't been able to write on here for quite a while so I made a poll on Instagram saying if I should upload a preview. And here it is! Reminder that this is still a draft so there will be mistakes and confusing bits. Anywayz- Enjoy!

It was currently the summer of the year Popee should've graduated. Yet, even though he got passing scores in the final exams, he remains a student. The Poppies were talking about Kedamono.

Kedamono was close to his mother even though he treats her like a tool, always serving him rice...
Whenever they celebrate over something they'd always have fried chicken.
One time, in elementary school, It was Kedamono's birthday and he drew a picture of him and his mother celebrating it by eating riceballs and fried chicken.
There was no father in the drawing.
When Kedamono was young his father died while trying to pick up an onigiri ball that had fallen off a cliff, and he was in a "Kissaku Otoshi" state*.
Since then, his mother has been raising him alone.

* Kissaku Otoshi is related to an old folk tale called Yoshisaku drop. You can search 吉作落とし on youtube and watch the video on it but it is entirely in japanese with no english subtitles.

During this summer, Kedamono's mother started working a part-time job at a resort Hotel in Miyazaki.
Miyazaki was Japan's most sunny prefecture. It was warm there and the blue sea and palm trees there made it feel like you were in an exotic country.

"Oh god, now I feel like going to a beach right now-" Crescent exclaimed suddenly.
All the poppies who were murmuring were surprised.
Crescent: "Why are you acting surprised? It's summer right now! Are we really gonna waste our youth by only going to working in the fields and not have fun??"
Popee: "What are you saying?? I'm working on a dance choreography this year!"
Kedamono: "This year's watermelon harvest is what made the summer already good- Nothing can beat that!"
Boron: "I'm going to be repeating 3rd next year anyways, so I can enjoy the same summer again, haha!"
Stain laughed along with Boron.
Crescent: "Eeh?! But there'd be girls there!-
The Poppies were silent- but they weren't surprised that he'd mention them.

There aren't any young women in this Genkai shūraku village.
30 years ago, some men here got married just so they could take women away from their cities or villages.
However, many of these women ran away after giving birth to their children.
The father would also leave the child, leaving them orphaned. Because of that the children were raised by all of the villagers here.

Kedamono's mother was one of those women. But she did not leave the village because she got along with Kedamono's father.
However, Popee and the others had to get married someday.

Crescent: "I want to meet my soulmate in a more decent way~"
Stain: "Yeah, it's too odd to meet someone the way Keda's parents met..."
Kedamono: "It's also a crime! We're all offsprings of a crime (T_T)"
Popee: "So it's a crime! It still made me! The one and only, beautiful me!"
Crescent: "It's nothing to joke about Popee! One of the villagers here died of depression because he was dumped by a city girl!! Plus I can't raise a child on my own-"
He was right.
Are we really gonna waste our youth by only going to working in the fields and not have fun?..
Crescent's words resonated with the boys.
If they don't get a lover and get married, the village won't grow.

They must hurry!
The five of them urgently made a plan called 'Sea of Love Love Operation'.
If they continue on being lonely, life would be boring.
Everyone thought of finding a lover, and finally becoming an adult.

They asked Palvan if he wanted to join them, but he pointed to the baby on his back and said "I can't go with you if she's there."
He was busy raising an abandoned baby.
So it was just gonna be Popee, Kedamono, Crescent, Boron and Stain going.
They planned to go to the beach at Aoshima, Miyazaki.
Kedamono had a postcard from his mom which pictured the beautiful ocean in Miyazaki, on the postcard it said "It's so beautiful, I might as well stay here forever,"
'Is the place even that good???' Thoughts ran through Kedamono's head.
Palvan: "Why don't you sell something there? You might get attention from the girls,"
Crescent: "That seems like a great idea!"
The Poppies decided to take watermelons with them, they pile them at the rear end of a car and drive off to Miyazaki.

They went to the address labelled on the postcard and arrived at Aoshima Grand Hotel in Miyazaki.
