*Knock Knock*
"Steven? You alright?" Dr Maheswaren asked as she came in to check on the teen that night before the end of her shift and saw that he had fallen fast asleep. She smiled like a mother watching her sleeping child.
True, Steven wasn't her son. But after all he had done for her daughter Connie...befriending her when no one else would...and that friendship turning into love....she couldn't see him as anything else but family at this point. Because that's exactly what he was.
Which is why seeing him like this with no memory of his friends or loved ones hurt her so much. She still could hear Connie's sobbing in her mind from that phone conversation.
"Priyanka? What are you still doing here?" A voice asked as Priyanka looked and saw Artemis approach her.
"Oh. I was hoping Steven was still up so I could tell him that he's going home tomorrow, Dr Diamante. I was heading home myself and thought I would check on him but he's fast asleep." She explained as Artemis chuckled.
"Ever the mother, I see. How's that daughter of yours? From what I've heard, she and Steven are pretty close and have been for quite some time now." He said as Priyanka smiled.
"Close? She's crazy over him. Loves him to pieces. I can't keep her away from him. Not that I really try. Steven's never gone out of his way to hurt her like those kids at her school did. I feel like he truly does love her and that's why it hurts so much that he doesn't remember their times together." She explained.
"Well this is just off the record, but do you think there's things about their relationship that Connie may not want him to remember? It's off the record, so don't worry. This is just for my own curiosity." Artemis said as Priyanka sighed.
"Well if I can think of one time, it would be a couple of years back. Connie got mad at Steven for what I still believe is the most petty reason you could think of. Especially considering the type of life and struggles Steven goes through. The poor boy was heartbroken with how Connie was ignoring him. It got to where I simply couldn't take it anymore and sat her down and told her how selfish she was being to someone who honestly cared for her and meant no harm." She explained.
"And what was the issue in question? What made Connie act the way she did?" Artemis asked.
"Steven saved her life. Saved the lives of six people. And the only thing Connie cared about was that she didn't get her moment to shine. That they didn't do it together. I sat her down and told her: When lives are on the line, childish promises like what she was getting on Steven for don't matter. *sighs* I can only hope that isn't the first memory Steven regains about Connie. She'd be heartbroken." Priyanka explained.
"Alright then. No more questions. I assume Steven's discharge papers are done for tomorrow?" Artemis asked as Priyanka nodded.
"Yes. He's set to go. I'll be here to keep things stable. No offense to you, Dr Diamante. But I'd rather oversee this due to my daughter's connection with Steven and his family." She said as Artemis laughed.
"I wouldn't have it any other way. I'll see you tomorrow, Priyanka." He said as he waved Priyanka off as she headed out the door. Artemis then looked at the still sleeping Steven before closing the door.
*The next day....*
It was awkward, to say the least. Steven had amnesia, so you could imagine the pure confusion on his face when Pearl and Garnet kissed him on the cheek as he came out of the hospital. He wanted to push them away, but Priyanka smiled and simply let him know that there was nothing to fear.
"Dr Diamante wanted to see you off but he had something to take care of. *looks at Greg* Greg? A word with you?" Priyanka said as Steven got in the van with Pearl and Garnet while Greg talked to Priyanka.
"What's wrong?" He asked as Priyanka sighed.
"Please. Please be careful when it comes to Steven. He has no memory of anything, but triggers are very likely. So please be careful about what you or the Gems say or do. Amnesia is a very tricky tightrope to walk and while I personally believe Steven has a lot of things he'd rather forget, it's best that he forget a certain memory than have the first one he regains be a traumatic or negative one. Is there anything you can think of around the house that could be a trigger?" Priyanka asked.
"Hmm. Only thing I can think of off the top of my head is the portrait of Rose. But that's since been taken down. In fact, the only one who knows or knew where it was is Steven himself." Greg explained.
"Hmm. Then if you get a chance, have one of the Gems look for it so that Steven doesn't stumble upon it." Priyanka said as the horn honked.
"Got it. Let me get moving. Pearl and Garnet aren't the only ones who are looking forward to seeing Steven. Thanks for everything, Priyanka." Greg said as Priyanka smiled.
"Greg. Steven is like family to me and Doug at this point after all he's done for Connie over the years. I daresay he will be once he gets his memory back." She replied as Greg laughed.
"Are you suggesting something, my future In-Law?" He said as Priyanka rolled her eyes and chuckled.
"I'm saying get out of here before I schedule an emergency circumcision and vasectomy for you." She replied as Greg laughed and headed to the van. Priyanka waved as she watched them drive off.
*Meanwhile...*
"Dr Diamante. A call. Shall I put in on your private line?" A nurse asked as Artemis nodded and picked up the phone.
"Hello?....yes.....So they're ready? Good. Prepare them and I'll be there to pick them up. I'll foward your payment ahead of time.....alright thank you....hmm? No. He's already left. Priyanka told me some interesting things about his relationship with her daughter Connie. So that's something we need keep in mind for future reference.
Also, do you have the other thing we discussed?....Perfect. I'll contact you when I'm on my way. *hangs up*
