Alex POV
Everything ran smoothly for the first year of college. Eliza and I were both taking three years, Peggy was taking two, and Angelica was taking four. The only things that happened that really stayed in my memory was Eliza's and I's first time having sex, and one day when Peggy made a decision.
Peggy had told me shortly after Eliza and I started dating that she was dating a girl. She seemed nervous and hopeful that I would accept her.
It was just us sitting in the Schuylers' bedroom. Eliza had gone to get us some coffee and Peggy was picking at her nails.
"Hey Alex?" she finally spoke up.
"Yeah, Peggy?" I looked up from where I was painting my nails black. I had seen another student, Connor Murphy, with painted nails and I thought I would try it. Eliza thought it was adorable, and that was basically saying, Do it or you'll die, because I need to see you with painted nails.
"Um, are you okay with LGBTQ?" she asked me, looking up with eyes full of fear.
"I am LGBTQ, Peggy. I'm bi," I explained.
Peggy let out a sigh of relief and flopped back on her bed. "Oh thank goodness. Anyway, I'm dating Maria. She's at a college in another state. And...I really miss her, and I want to go be with her, but if I leave, I'll miss my sisters. And what if we break up? What then?"
"What color is your pillow sham?" I asked, still painting my nails.
"Yellow."
"Oh, so you're soulmates. I don't think you'll break up, Peggy, and there's such things as video chat and texting, you know."
"I know, Alex, but it's spring, and what if they don't have my specific major? But every time we video chat Maria tells me she loves me and misses me so so much and she always looks sad. I don't know," Peggy finished.
"I don't know, Peggy. I'm really bad at this stuff."
"You're not! Eliza loves you!"
"Eliza loves everybody, Peggy. She just has a special affinity for me. I have a feeling that if I was dating someone else we would be over by now."
"You're her soulmate, Alex. What I'm trying to say, is, soulmate or sisters?" Peggy asked.
"I can't make a decision for you, Peggy. I'm sorry. I guess if you see your future with Maria, then go to her college. If you don't, then don't." I felt awkward trying to help Peggy, but I knew she saw me as a big brother and she needed help.
"Okay," Peggy said as I started blowing on my nails to dry the polish.
Eliza came back a few minutes later and handed me my coffee with a quick kiss on the lips. "What did you guys talk about while I was gone?"
"Dribble-drabbles," said Peggy, airily.
Peggy POV
It was time to tell Angelica and Eliza that I was going to Maria's college. I knew they would probably try to stop me, but I saw my future with Maria, and after some researching I discovered that they had my major. I saw pictures of the dorms and they were clean, neat, and spacious.
Sure enough, when I told them, Angelica's first reaction was, "You can't do this."
"Yes, I can, and the move has already been made," I told her firmly.
"I'm your older sister, Peggy, and-"
"I can take care of myself."
"Peggy, please, I don't think you've thought this all the way through," Eliza said.
"I've definitely thought it through. You don't know how long I've been thinking about this," I said, standing tall and proud. "I wouldn't have just brought it up if I didn't mean it."
"Peggy," Angelica tried to reason with me, "this just sounds like something impulsive you would do to get attention. Can you slow down and think about this for a moment please?"
That was it. I shouted at my sisters, letting out all the emotions that I had just pent up over the years, showing them the scars on my wrists from when I just felt like I was "and Peggy" and I would never be anything else, letting them know exactly what I thought of them. Then I picked up my bags, spat "Good riddance," and walked out of the dorms, running into George King on the way out but not even caring.
I took one last look back at them. Angelica stood with her fists balled up and her mouth tight, and Eliza had tears running down her face.
I wish I had done things differently.
So much differently.
