Ludovica laid on the ground, staring up at the sky as the birds chirped high in the canopy. The wind picked up pace, yanking a couple of leaves from the trees, which then fluttered to the ground without a sound.

"What are you thinking about?" Asked Joanna from beside her as she sat, doodling something in her book.

"Nothing."

"What happened yesterday?" She asked, meeting her gaze. "Walter and you..." She closed her book and inhaled. "I know how easy it is for us to hide our pain—but it's not healthy to hold it all in. I've heard the stories about our prince...it must be breaking him inside to not be able to find his mate."

Ludovica stared at the birds as they moved on the branches above. "So many would give anything to become Alpha, without knowing of the sacrifices we make."

"I've been unfair to Rhett—He told me long ago how he never wanted to be like Victor. We watched him put the pack above everything, even his family. He was a great Alpha, but perhaps not a great grandfather. He focused on being the alpha to the point that he rarely spend time with Rhett or Wyatt."

"Just because he was a workaholic doesn't mean he didn't love them."

"I know, but Rhett and Wyatt were so young—the moment they had the opportunity, they left the pack.  Rhett told me that what was the point of them being here when for their grandfather...they didn't exist. He wouldn't notice if they were here or not." She hugged the book to her chest. "I see a common theme with Alphas."

Ludovica sat up. "And what is that?"

"The moment we become Alphas it's like we lose most of the things we cherish." She met Ludovica's gaze. "Walter is our prince, respected by many but he like the rest of the alphas trusts no one. They don't allow anyone to get too close...and I've come to understand why. So many are willing to do anything to take the tittle from you."

Ludovica fought back tears as she recalled her own Beta betraying her because she saw her as unfit to be Alpha. "You're right." She forced a smile. "We have trust issues."

Joanna smiled before narrowing her eyes. Ludovica lurched to her feet at the scent of blood. Not wasting time, they both moved through the woods the fastest they could. Ludovica shifted before Joanna did and now, their wolves took full control, sprinting at full speed, their paws thudding against the forest floor.

Within seconds, they came face to face with a man standing over a dead body, blood pouring from the many lacerations onto the earth, staining the blades of grass.

Ludovica snarled, bearing her teeth. The male faced them, a menacing smile on his lips which were stained with blood. When he launched himself at Ludovica, she dodged him effortlessly.

Before the vampire had a chance to do anything, Joanna managed to bring him down and tear him to shreds within seconds. After shifting back to human form, she stood from the crouched position, her naked body bathed in scarlet.

"A vampire."

Rhett and Wyatt came, obviously having caught the smell of blood as well. Within a blink of an eye, Rhett was beside Joanna to make sure the blood wasn't hers.

After shifting into human form, Ludovica arched an eyebrow as she glanced at Wyatt, who simply shrugged, clearly holding back a smile.
