Once though the portal, Eleanor and Dimitri sat on the ground, lost in thought. Eleanor met his gaze before running a hand through her hair.
"I'm such a fool."
"Yes, you are."
She kicked at his feet playfully. "Don't you talk when you yourself didn't reveal your identity to your mate."
"For the past few months, I believed I was human—that I would age as the years passed." He stared at his trembling hands as fire flowed through them. "But I'm not—the effects were temporary." He glanced at the sky, eyes shimmering like white pearls. Eleanor knew Fae could have an effect on the weather and at his pain, bits of snow flakes began to flutter to the ground which probably freaked out a few humans since it was far from winter. "I'm terrified she will hate me when she knows the truth."
She let out a humorless laugh as she stared at the now cloudy sky. "I understand your fear—I know that you might not agree with the fact after knowing the truth that I chose to stay away from Walter—He deserves better—I will not bring him anything good." She met Dimitri's gaze. "Many hate me just because of the blood coursing through my blood...I know a lot of wolves will challenge him for his title just because...because of me." She fought back tears as she averted her gaze. "I don't want anything to happen to him. If that means that I have to stay away from him—then I will."
"Are you two bloody done feeling sorry for yourselves?" Jace stood beside Anthony, both looking far from pleased. "Both of you were bloody fools for heading in there—Did you forget there is some psycho who desires to drain your powers?"
Anthony placed his hands in the pockets of his jeans. "Jace is right—What were you thinking?"
"We wanted to make sure they were okay." Dimitri stood, glaring at both of them, eyes flickering amber. "Is that so hard to understand—our mate's are in pain."
Eleanor stared into the distance. "Ludovica is also someone our enemy desires."
"We haven't forgotten but all of you together would have made things far easier for the enemy," Jace said. "Ludovica is loved by many...if someone dared try to take her, everyone would stand in the way—but you two—" Jace stopped himself.
"We are not so loved—I know that." Eleanor wrapped her arms around herself.
"There are rumors spreading like crazy." Anthony stared at the ground for the longest. "Walter is to wed Jessica soon...and Ludovica will be marrying the vampire king to seal their alliance."
"How the hell do you know that?" Dimitri asked almost in a growl.
"I told him." Jace stood with pride. "The vampire king is my uncle after all."
Dimitri's pain affected them all. Eleanor didn't stand, knowing she would fall to her knees when her body trembled at his immense agony.
"Sorry—Maybe I should have kept that to myself." Jace stepped closer to Dimitri and placed a hand on his shoulder. "My friend, it is best for you to reveal yourself to her before she finds out by someone else."
At the house, Isaac didn't hide how displeased he was with both of them. Eleanor told him that she had accompanied Dimitri so that he wouldn't be alone of anything happened.
Dimitri grabbed a cup and poured some wine in it before offering it to Eleanor. She took it as she sat at one of the stools on the island.
"See you tomorrow—You have a lot to explain to me, Eleanor," Kathleen said. "I was scared shitless when Isaac called me asking for you."
"Sorry—I didn't mean to worry everyone."
Kathleen hugged her. "I'm glad you're okay." She smiled at Anthony. "Can you take me home?" Anthony didn't argue and headed out of the house by her side.
