Chapter 10:
Jake’s POV:
“I’m sorry, okay?”
Sorry… Sorry…. Sorry...
The words echoed in my head, circling like a train circuit.
“I’m sorry for everything.” I snapped back to the present as Drew continued. My whole body was frozen in shock, and the words were barely processing.
“I’m sorry for trying to change you and move you from your passion of singing, Jake. I’m sorry for making fun of your band and calling them freaks. I realize now that I’ve made a huge mistake, and I shouldn’t have messed with your relationship with Hailey.
“I’m especially sorry to you, Zander. I understand she’s your sister, and I can’t imagine what that’s like. It was I who grabbed Jake, and led him away from Hailey. Jake didn’t leave on his own. I took him away from her, and Zoey knocked Hailey out. Please forgive me. I can change, I swear! Maybe I’ll turn into a better person that you guys will be happy with, and we can all be even…”
Everyone went silent. The emptiness spread across the group like a frigid layer of ice. The only sound was the faint summer wind whistling out the windows, and the distant leaves fluttering in the breeze..
“You’re… sorry?” Zander repeated.
“Sorry,” Drew nodded. “I’m truly sorry and I hope you can forgive my actions.”
“I never thought you’d say that,” whistled Milly as soon as the tension broke. “After so many years of harassment… This is like a dream come true.”
“You’re serious, right?” I said, mind swirling in disbelief. “Actually serious?”
Drew said, “Dead serious.”
We all exchanged glances as if daring each other who to speak first. Twenty full seconds passed before Sean cleared his throat. But surprisingly, it wasn’t him who spoke.
“Huh?”
“I said I forgive you. Are you deaf?” he rolled his eyes, and then laughed. After a moment, Drew broke into a smile.
“Really?”
“Really,” Zander confirmed. “I guess I shouldn’t have taken everything out on Jake… Somedays I do hope I stop reading between lines and try to see behind the actual picture.”
“Thanks, Zander,” I said, voice somewhat brighter now. The apology had somehow caused everyone to stand a little straighter, and eyes glittered vividly.
A sigh of relief escaped Drew’s lips. “Don’t worry about Hailey, though. Zoey is pretty weak, and she shouldn’t be hurt at all. In fact, I’m a bit surprised the nurses are taking so long to get her back on her feet.”
“I guess I was being overdramatic, then,” chuckled Zander. It was a strange sight to see him smile. “It’s not like she’s going to die or anything.” he straightened, and then looked me in the eye. The amethyst depths met my brown ones.
“I’m sorry Jake,” he said slowly, “I guess I shouldn’t have panicked and blamed everything on you. It’s an instinct, you know?”
My tongue had somehow tangled, and I couldn’t manage words to escape my lips. “I…. Yeah, it’s alright,” I managed some time later.
All of the sudden, a faint ringing sound came from the group. Sean looked at his phone.
“Oh! I have to run some chores for my grandmother right now,” he said quickly, looking up. “I promised her I’d be back for dinner, and it’s nearly six in the evening. I’ll see you guys later!” he called over his shoulder as he headed out the building.
“That reminds me - I’m getting kinda hungry now,” said Milly thoughtfully. “Luke - get us some food.”
“No need to be so demanding,” said Luke, but then broke into a cheerful grin. “Let’s go to the pizza place down Lander Lane!”
“Don’t forget about us!” Henry called. I jumped. I had almost forgotten that Liam and Henry were there.
“Guess I’ll go too,” shrugged Drew.
' “You coming, Zander?” asked Luke.
“I think I’ll stay here,” was the quiet response. “I wanna wait until Hailey wakes up.”
“I’ll say too,” I added.
The others nodded their understanding and then left, the tinkle of bells trailing after them. Soon, it was just me and Zander as we waited anxiously for Hailey...
