Dear Kai,

The first time I laid eyes on you
I was blinded by hate.
Much like Mark was, I suppose.

There was hate
for you just standing there.
Hate for you not saying anything.
So much hate, there was so much hate, for your Wallflower tendencies.

Because I didn't understand.

I didn't understand
the downward falling of your
always too small smiles.
I didn't understand
the hooded cast of your
always drooping eyes.
I didn't understand
the permanent sulking of your
always sad face.

I grouped you into the transphobic circle with Mark without ever knowing your story.

It was wrong of you
to just stand there.
It was also wrong of me
to simply assume the worst.

I apologize, Kai.

Not only for my assumptions,
but for the sins of your father.
No child deserves even a fraction
of what you had to go through.

I'm sorry, Kai.
I'm so, so sorry.
