"Y-you just threw up flower petals and blood..." tendou looked up from the toilet seat.
"I know, kinda weird right?" he joked.
"Y-you don't know what that is...?" Tendou tried to remember, but nothing came to mind.
"No, why? Is it some deadly disease where I'll die in a few months?"
"Have you ever heard o-of hanahaki disease?"
"Nope!"
"H-how are you so happy? Hanahaki is the disease of unrequited love! Who hurt you?"
"Unrequited love...that's not quite right...he said he loved me," Tendou speculated quietly. "Why don't we go to the library, hm?" Tendou flushed the toilet. The whole world seemed to burn around him. He could just imagine the flames. He knew he was hurting, but Tendou couldn't really feel it. Everything looked like it was on fire. It must've been the morphine, keeping him from hurting. He could just observe his pain around him. Was this how he would feel when the drugs wore off? Tendou led Goshiki to the school library. He knew he'd agreed to meet both Ushijima and Eita for lunch, but he couldn't right now. He needed to know how much longer he had. If this was even real. "Show me a book about this, hm?"
"O-okay..." Goshiki led him to a book and opened it.
The Hanahaki Disease is an illness born from one-sided love, where the patient throws up and coughs up flower petals (sometimes blood) when they suffer from one-sided love. The infection can be removed through surgery, but the feelings disappear along with the petals.
Tendou laughed.
"Why are you laughing?" Goshiki paled.
"Just my luck," Tendou chuckled. "I also may be high right now..."
"Tendou, don't take drugs!"
"Doesn't matter, I only have a few months anyway. He loves you. You know, I still remember that day I was wearing Ushiwaka's jacket. It was only a couple of months ago. He said I looked better in it than he did..."
"I-It's Ushi? He- he said he loved you?" Tendou shook his head.
"Goshiki, don't worry. He obviously doesn't love me. He's just...confused..."
"W-why wouldn't he love you...?"
"Because he doesn't understand me. You know, I watched his eyes as you walked by. His beautiful golden eyes. i swear to God, Goshiki, you're a sight for sore eyes...brighter than a blue sky..." Tendou trailed off.
"T-Tendou stop hurting yourself. I could never love him!"
"But you do...and that's fine. You've got him mesmerized...I'll just sit here and die," he chuckled.
"Tendou! Don't say that!"
"But it's true, isn't it?"
"You can get the surgery!"
"Fuck the surgery!" he whisper-yelled. "I still want to keep his eyes in my life..." Tendou let out a small cough, revealing a crimson petal in his hand. "How can something so beautiful be so dangerous...?" Goshiki's face dulled.
"What happened to you...?"
"Love." Tendou walked out of the library and headed to the cafeteria where both Ushijima and Eita were waiting for him.
"where were you?" they both asked in unison. Tendou sort of wanted to say, 'oh just finding out about my inevitable death,' but he didn't.
"I asked Goshiki to show me something in the library. It was something...I needed research for."
"Why would you need help from your underclassmen?" Ushijima asked.
"Maybe it was important," Eita countered. The tension between the two boys was killing Tendou.
"Now now," he said, putting his arms around both of them, "let's not get too tense, hm?" The pressure flattened and Goshiki walked inside the room.
"Tendou Senpai!" he called, panting as he ran. "I checked out the book for you!" Tendou took the book from Goshiki.
"Thanks," he said, ruffling the small boy's dark hair. Eita tried to read the title, but Tendou covered it with his hand. He didn't want anyone else to know. Not yet. Everything was still on fire. Tendou coughed, smelling non existent smoke. Tendou felt like he was floating far away. He found himself in the field once more, staring at the grey sky. Staring at Semi Eita's stormy eyes. Tendou was surrounded by flowers of all colors. Crimson, violet, deep shades of green and blue. He reached down to touch one, but it flew away. So did the next one. Soon, all of the flowers were floating away from Tendou into the distance. Tendou got up and followed them, taking in their sweet aroma. They smelled like love and passion. But they also smelled like sadness. Like flowers who begged to be watered, but their beauty wasn't enough for them to live. Beautiful, unique flowers who didn't get the love they spread to others. Flowers who were dying. The trail led to figure in the distance. Ushijima was standing alone. Tendou couldn't help it. He started running to him as fast as he could. He just needed to get closer to the one he loved. Maybe then, he would be loved back. Ushijima stood still, but he got farther away. With each step Tendou took, Ushijima fell a foot back. One more inch farther away from him. Unreachable. A paradox. A paradox that left Tendou panting on the ground, watching the world around him dissolve. Ushijima was unreachable. He would always be. Tendou opened his eyes to find a new scene before him. There were two boys in front of him, Ushijima and Eita. There was no field, just a grey sky. He looked between both of them. Did he have to chose? His eyes shifted from Eita to Ushijima. He wanted desperately to love EIta, but he couldn't. He could feel time running out. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Click. Click. Click. Tendou found himself by Ushijima's side. He wrapped his arms around his neck, to find thin air. Ushijima was gone. He dissolved. He looked over to Eita, who stood with a dull expression, shaking his head. Tendou ran to him, but found himself falling. He landed in a bouquet of flowers. Blood ran down his mouth. Tendou was left in a pile of flowers, with neither. He should've ran to Eita. Tendou tried to drown himself in the flowers before he was returned to reality.
