Peace is a lie-there is only passion.
Through passion I gain strength,
Through strength I gain power,
Through power I gain victory;
Through victory my chains are broken.

All over New York people were waking up. Clary woke beside Jace, Izzy beside Simon, Alec beside Magnus, Jocelyn beside Luke, Robert beside Maryse.

Upon waking up, Clary made her way toward the Institute kitchen for breakfast, walked past it after seeing Izzy with a red apron leaning over a pot of foul-smelling green liquid. She made a snap decision to get takeout from Taki's for all of the institute's inhabitants.

Walking down the street, she paused to check the time on her phone. "Shit", she whispered to herself, realizing she left it in Jace's room at the institute.

Luckily she remembered her wallet and a seraph blade, so she continued on her way to Taki's.

On her way back, she saw someone watching her in the alleyway. Clary wasn't worried, although they could see through her glamour.

This had happened before- a stray vampire drawn by the scent of Simon's blood, usually. Still, she walked a little faster and placed her hand on her seraph blade.

Clary realized that something was definitely up when she saw a similar figure for the fourth alley in a row. At this point, Clary was cursing her stupidity- she hadn't left a note, she didn't even have her phone, for Raziel's sake.

At the next intersection, she felt something grab onto her ankle and she stumbled, her Shadowhunter training kicking in at the last second and stopping her from falling. Again, she couldn't have been more unprepared. No stele, which was really the only thing that made her any good as a Shadowhunter. She screamed as she was dragged backward into the alley, nails scraping uselessly against the pavement.

This time, however, luck was on her side. She managed to shake her foot out of her boot, and during the split second the thing, whatever it was, continued pulling her boot along, get to her feet. It was a small demon, a ravener by the looks of it, and on its own.

"Castiel", She murmured as her seraph blade lit up.

She hadn't fought without runes for a long time, and found herself getting quite tired slicing, dodging, stabbing, and rolling. She made a mental note to work on that later.

After the demon had been sent back to hell, Clary walked the remaining blocks to the institute, the pancakes from Taki's forgotten.

"We can't risk anyone knowing about-" Alec's voice cut off abruptly as Clary stomped into the institute.

She couldn't blame him- she could imagine what she looked like- hair flying everywhere, missing one boot, ichor staining and eating through her jeans and blue Ce nes pas une pipe tee. Wait. If Alec was at the institute, talking to his mother before breakfast, it must be serious, as he usually didn't show up for training until 9:00. "What happened to you?" He asked, blue eyes wide and startled.

She began to explain, but at that moment Jace burst into the room. "Where were you?" He queried, genuine worry clouding his features. "You didn't have your phone or anything! For all I knew you'd been taken by the ducks!"
Clary explained again this time to Maryse, Alec, Jace and Izzy, who had come in just as she mentioned the ravener grasping onto her ankle.

When she had finished, Alec and Maryse exchanged a meaningful look, saying nothing.

Jace didn't seem troubled by the events, however was troubled by the lack of pancakes. Maryse suggested that Clary, Jace and Izzy go to Taki's for breakfast, and as the three set off, they heard the low- voiced discussion between Maryse and her eldest son resume.

Clary saw no outward signs of stress from the others, so resolved to put the events out of her mind and enjoy breakfast out.
___

After a long and strenuous day of training, and after Alec had gone home, Izzy, Jace, and Clary discussed the events of the day over reheated mu shu pork.
"Any idea what is so secret only mom and Alec know about it?" Izzy asked.

"The only thing that comes to mind is the affair between them" Jace replied, looking thoughtful.

"You know about that, though, why wouldn't they include you in the conversation? It sounded secret to me- something only Maryse and maybe Robert were supposed to know about, but that Alec found out by accident" Clary suggested thoughtfully.

"I have no clue." said Jace, putting his plate in the sink as a sign of defeat.

Clary followed suit, and the two walked hand in hand upstairs, ignoring Isabelle muttering about how she is always left to do the dishes.

It was only then that they realized they hadn't seen Simon all day.
