During the second world war, many people have been hurt mentally and physically, Irene is one of them. She suffered many traumatizing events that made her change her perspective on the world around her. Irene's life has turned very dark at a young age. She went through much phycological trauma. One of which being on the verge of death at just the age of seventeen, "Then they raped me and left me for dead in the snow, under the frozen stars, with the dark forest keeping watch over my death" (page 35, Gut Opdyke). Such events made her change her perspective on the world and the people around her. Irene's life was never suitable for a young woman but didn't stop Irene from moving on. She has been in many different horrible places throughout the war, and she thankfully got out of them all. "We walked past the cell I had spent such hateful hours in..." (page 68, Gut Opdyke). Irene has been in a sort of prison a few times throughout the war, sometimes with help other times on her own Irene managed to go free of them all. The trauma and pain that Irene experienced during WW2 are indescribable and unmatched, but that obviously didn't stop Irene.
