Swathed in my cozy fleecy towel, I grasped my phone from my bedside to check if I had received any notifications before I proceeded to have my bath. I'd gotten a text from Cole, he had sent it around 2am.

Private number: I know you're probably asleep rn. Friendly reminder not to forget about the sport match.

Me: I didn't forget

I took an extensive, revitaling shower toweled off and began to forage through my closet for a suitable outfit. I decided on a pair of denim blue shorts and a black T-shirt with a cute little dinasour sketched in white on it before heading over to my mom's room.

My mom was typing away leisurely on her phone whilst humming a tune. She was so immersed in her phone, she didn't notice me until I moved closer.

"So, mom could you..." I started but was disrupted by her chipping in to complete my sentence

"Please give me some cash."

I guffawed and turned my head from side to side "no, I'm not here for cash."

My mom tsked "I know, that was my frail attempt at a joke. What were you actually here for?"

"I want you to style my hair into one ponytail and then lay my edges, pretty please. You're awfully good at stuff like this." I gave her a winsome smile.

"Come sit here, we can have a talk while we're at it." She patted a spot beside her on the bed and I complied

"I've been thinking of quitting my job." She divulged as she stood up to get some hair products from her shelf. She could kickoff a minute business on hair products with the quantity she held in her storage.

I gaped at her bewildered, she looked too nonchalant for someone who had resolved to resign from our only source of revenue "why?"

"I need a job that pays more with less hours, I don't get to spend enough time with you it's disheartening." She smiled dejectedly, unscrewing the cap of the hair serum she had in hand.

"I know right." I nodded in agreement

"Anything new with you?" She probed

"Nah, same old, same old. What about you? There's gotta be something interesting, funny or weird that happened at work." I insisted

"Well, someone got fired last week for almost burning down the storage room, and turns out our manager got that position because she's the boss's mistress." My mom informed me, gently massaging various products into my hair

"Oh wow, I feel sorry for the guy who got sacked and as for the manager I have no idea what to say. The gossip must be vicious." I replied

"And then there's one of my co-worker that got married to this man twice her age, heard it was for the money. I dunno." She shrugged

"I hear news like that all the time." I replied thoughtfully

"I know right. Want me to put in temporary dye?" She questioned as she ran a wide toothed comb through my hair gently

"I don't want to get into water." I declined shivering slightly at the thought.

"You won't have to go into water, you'll just rub it into your hair and voila the color changes." She brought out a black scrunchie with a small bow attached to it and strung my hair up together into a neat ponytail

"What colors do you have?" I was genuinely interested

"Purple, red, green, gold." She explained

"Why do you even have them in the first place?" I chuckled

"I dunno, I guess I bought them because they came in fancy packaging." My mom's a child at heart, I thought to myself.
