After cleaning myself up and changing into my normal clothes, I grabbed my phone. I wanted to text Richard but I’m so unsure. I kept it and went to sleep.
The next day, I immediately looked for my phone. I saw that I have received twelve messages.
The first said “Good morning.”
The other said “How’s your sleep?”
“Did you sleep well?” the third said.
One said “Hello.”
Another said “I missed you. :) “
The next one said “…my girlfriend :P”
There were so many others like these. I knew who they came from. Richard. Somehow, I felt annoyed by his texts but I also found it cute. I saved his number in my contacts.
It texted back and said “gud morning! fortunately, I didn’t dream of you. Bleh! :P”
I immediately got a reply. “haha. :)” it said.
We texted for about an hour until I decided to get out of my bed and eat my breakfast.
When I went downstairs, I saw my family still waiting for me just like last night. Fortunately, most of them had gone home. Only my parents remained. This proves that they are really persistent on knowing what happened. Another proof is when my mom started dropping hints after I ate my breakfast.
“I hope you had fun last night.” She said.
“I did.” I replied.
“Richard’s mom must be nice.” She said.
“She is.” I replied.
“Richard’s a nice kid.” She said.
“Uh-uh.” I mumbled.
She really wants to hear about something cheesy. Well, I have no story to tell. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy yesterday. It’s just that I don’t want to tell my parents. It would feel awkward.
To escape our conversation, I asked for food. I grabbed a slice of bread and went up my room.
I grabbed my phone to text Richard. I was expecting messages from him in my inbox but instead there was only one coming from Cheska. I read it. I was surprised by what it said.
“Since you had a boyfriend, you had no time for me anymore.”
I felt sad. What kind of best friend am I to make her feel that bad without me realizing it? She must feel so disappointed in me. I think I should tell her the truth and explain the whole situation. Yet, that would be a crime against Richard. Oh well. I’ll figure it all out. Soon.
“I’m so sorry. I’ll make it up to you. Meet me at HQ.” I texted Cheska.
“I have something to tell you. IN PERSON. :D” I added.
Immediately, Cheska replied. “What? Did your BF do something?”
“No. Let’s just meet.” I texted back.
I dressed up in a hurry. I grabbed anything I could and headed to our headquarters – the ice cream shop.
After five minutes, Cheska arrived. I ran to her and said sorry. I ordered chocolate sundaes for the two of us. We sat down.
“I hope this makes you feel better.” I told her.
She smiled. “You know me too well.”
She ate a small scoop and said “Thanks. It’s just… you’ve been keeping secrets. It’s so not like you.”
She’s right. I always told her everything. I would look for her and literally scream at her ear. Why did I suddenly forget doing that?
Cheska continued speaking. “Days ago you told me that you didn’t know the guy but then I heard from our classmates that you introduced him to your parents. Guess what. I’ve heard! You didn’t tell me. I had to fish for news about my best friend.”
I gestured that she eat more ice cream. She did. She calmed down afterwards.
“Kris, I never even knew that he courted you. How long have you been keeping this? You lied to me. How could you? I’m your best friend! Does that even matter anymore? I just want to know the truth.” She said, tensing up once again.
She burst into tears. So did I.
“Please don’t cry. I didn’t lie. It was true!” I started saying. “At the time, I really didn’t really know the guy. It’s also true that I introduced him to my parents as a boyfriend. It’s just so hard to explain.” I added.
“No matter how hard it is, explain! Kristine, explain!” she told me.
We’re going to need more galloons of ice cream.
I have to tell her the truth. What about Richard? He’s secret would be revealed. But I trust that Cheska won’t tell. I know her. Still, it feels weird to be telling someone a secret that holds so much value. I had to do this. I’m sorry Richard.
I held her hand and looked her in the eye.
“He is my boyfriend! Sort of. At the same time, he’s not.” I said.
Cheska’s mouth hanged open. “What?”
“He needed my help to be his girlfriend, a fake one. There’s a girl that he likes. I wasn’t supposed to spill it but then you got upset. I’m sorry.” I admitted to her.
I bothered my best friend’s feelings. She was sad and I didn’t like it. I had to make her feel better.
We kept quiet for a minute.
Afterwards, we stopped crying.
“I’m so sorry. I was overreacting. I get it now. I’m sorry. I won’t tell anyone.” She said, with a hint of embarrassment in her eyes.
“No. It’s my fault. I’m really sorry.” I told her.
To settle everything, we ordered more ice cream. Then everything was fine.
Ice cream can work wonders.
I’m happy that things worked out.
I just had to explain to Richard. I hope he understands.
