District 21 of the Chicago Police Department is comprised of the uniformed cops who patrol the beat and go head-to-head with the city's street crimes, and the elite detectives of the Intelligence Unit that combats the city's major offenses, including organized crime, drug trafficking, and high-profile murders.

Detective Jay Halstead is a senior member of the Intelligence Unit, where he is partnered with Detective Hailey Upton after his former partner went missing undercover. While he never wanted to give up hope, the CPD assumed her dead and he was resigned to accept it. Now, two years later, Jay gets a sudden phone call with news that changes his life forever.

Avery Clarke is alive.

For the purpose of this story, Erin Lindsay does not exist – Avery was taken in by Voight and essentially filled Erin's role. Her relationship with Jay also follows the same timeline, except they do not break up until after she quits Intelligence.

Now, this is where I'm editing a few things because as I got further into planning/writing, I decided I originally had her missing for longer than I wanted. So, bear with me!

Avery goes missing between Season 4 Episode 20 & Episode 21. The storyline of Jay's secret wife never existed, and they never broke up. The storyline of Justin's death is being moved to take place between these episodes, shortly after Avery goes missing. Hailey joins Intelligence as her replacement. So – all in all, she's been missing for about two years and was unofficially declared "dead" after six months, propelling Jay's early Season 5 storyline with Camila etc.

Hopefully that makes sense! You'll see some slight changes to reflect this throughout the story but feel free to ask any questions to clarify things.
