Standstorms Strong winds are characteristic of deserts, as there are frew plants to slow them down. The dry sands can be easily picked up to create a sandstorm. The whirling sand can be so thick that the sky darkens, making it hard to see more than a few paces ahead.

Ancient Remains Deserts are good places to find archeological remains because there are few plants to cover them up, and the winds blow away the topsoil. These flint arrowheads from Sahara were used to hunt birds and small mammals. The y show that the Sahara was once a rich hunting ground.
Dry Earth When water dries up it leaves behind cracked earth, and this spot once a part of the Azraq oasis in the Jordan which has been pumped dry. As more people settle in the desert, the oases and water supplies from bore wells are hard pushed to match consumption.

This brd of rock hard salt crystals lies in Death Valley, California, which is one of the hottest places in the world. Water draining from the surrounding mountains carries down dissolved salts, which then recrystallize and form a salt bed as the water evaporates.
