I was sitting on my bed near the triangular attic window, watching the sun reflect off the dust that was slowly falling onto the ground in the sun's ray.
There weren't very many kids in this orphanage. There were beds all aligned in an orderly way. Two beds would be facing each other on opposite sides of the wall. That's how the entire room was. There were about eight beds total in the attic, but only four girls remained in this room. The beds each had a dark brown wooden frame, but it was sealed with something to avoid splinters. They were all single beds with black sheets and a black puffy blanket that easily collected fuzz. It's annoying, but I guess I'm use to it.
This is only the girl's room though. The boy's room on the other hand was on the second floor of the house. Only two bunk beds were in the room though on opposite sides. We only had three boys in this whole orphanage.
All the girls here were friends, including me. Considering the fact there were only four of us it was an easy to manage group.
Margaret Fernsby and August Williams are my best friends out of all. Margaret has dark beady brown eyes that almost looked black with medium brown wavy hair that rested upon her shoulders, she was slightly taller than me. I'm like...5'1...maybe?
August on the other hand, has black hair that he always has parted down the middle, he also had the shade of amber colored eyes that I've always dreamt of having. He was a lot taller than me and he was exactly one year older. I went to him for more things I did Margaret.
Not that Margaret was any bad, it's just the connection I shared with August was more special and sincere.
Margaret is very talkative, but she's a great listener and practically everything you could ask for in a best friend. She's very trustworthy and cheerful.
August and I have a different connection though, he's like Margaret slightly, with being trustworthy and a great listener. Yet he's very protective and he always tries to make sure I'm on the right path.
I was the only one in the room at the moment, all the girls were downstairs in the dining room eating lunch. I was always first to finish because I preferred to be alone and I also ate quickly. My small apatite definitely did not help.
I heard knocking on the attic window, it didn't seem like ordinary knocking, it sounded more quiet and hallow.
I looked to the right, at the window and saw this large white owl standing on the sill with a letter in it's beak.
It was a very absurd sight to see, but I got really excited once I remembered what Miss Willis—the orphanage caretaker—had told me before. She told me about how Hogwarts sends letters to students to accept them into their school.
I stood up and grabbed the window latch and pulled it upward, unlocking the window. I slowly opened the window in fear of the owl doing something odd. It flew in quickly and dropped the envelope on my bed. It then flew back out and I watched it fly away into the distance, slowly disappearing into the sky. I was still in shock of what just happened because it was all too quick for my brain to process.
I walked towards my bed slowly and picked up the letter with my right hand.
"Alyssa Potter" was written on the back in black ink and in cursive. Whoever wrote it had very nice hand writing. I flipped it over and there was a red stamp, created out of wax, holding the letter shut. I opened the letter, slightly breaking the wax stamp, and I unfolded the piece of paper inside of it.
"Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry" it said at the top of the paper. My heart skipped a beat in excitement and a huge smile plastered on my face. I didn't know how to react with this huge feeling of joy, but I was finally invited into the school of my dreams.
