Edward Baudelaire is a stoic military man whose only concern is his eventual death on the battlefield. When he earns himself the rank of Captain, his brother, in commemoration of this promotion, sends him a gift. Edward finds himself troubled and heavily burdened with the gift and vows to get rid of it before it can disrupt his life any further.
