Over a thousand years ago Niklaus Mikaelson was engaged and quickly wed to the daughter of the Jarl who passed through with his Viking crew.

He was wealthy as was Mikael Mikaelson. Seeing as Elijah was so taken with another woman of the village, and Finn much too...precious to Mikael, he swore off Niklaus to the Jarl's daughter.

She lived with the Mikaelson family as tradition and courtesy demanded and was swiftly revealed by Esther to be a witch, a very powerful one at that.

At this knowledge, Esther placed the young girl under a spell when she turned her children into vampires. This spell cursed the girl to an eternity of sleep.

And no matter his efforts, Niklaus could not wake his love...not in a thousand years.
