"What did you say?" I ask Steven, as Dad and I make our way towards him at the hospital.

"Nothing that wouldn't have made sense if Ted had simply stuck to his plan and died." He tells us. "I had to think quick. I knew what Sam told me, that Ted wanted it to look like Sam pushed him."

"Sam didn't push him?" Dad questions.

"No. Sam didn't do anything." Steven says. "Ted might have Sam's blood on him. I couldn't find the earring. Plus, if Ted wakes up from the coma, this is gonna look worse because I lied."

"That can't happen." Dad replies. "You have to get into his room before anyone else does."

"Dad." Sam starts, horrified, and I roll my eyes.

"To wipe off the blood, you idiot, not to kill him." I tell him. "Who do you think we are? A cult?"

"The nurse won't let in anyone who's not family." Steven tells us, and Dad thinks about a way. He moves to the buzzer, and presses it.

"What are you doing?" Steven asks, confused, but Dad just starts yelling.

"Because you're a same-sex partner, you're not considered family?" He shouts.

"Sir, keep your voice down, or you'll be asked to leave." The nurse tells him, as I just watch from the side, amused.

"What is this, 1952? My son can't comfort a dying man, the love of his life, because of his sexual orientation?" He yells. "This is inexcusable, not to mention disrespectful to all the gays, the LTBZ community!"

"Close enough." Steven mutter.

"So close." I mutter.

"Sir, I didn't know he was Mr. Dinard's partner. He didn't mention—" The nurse tries to say.

"Or you weren't listening, because he's gay." Dad cuts her off.

She sighs, trying to think of something.

"Follow me." She tells Steven. "And I'll waive visiting hours."

As they walk away, Dad turns to me with a proud smile, and I just give him a look.

"LTBZ?" I ask him, and he shrugs. "Who do you think are part of that? Lesbians, transgenders, bisexuals, and Zebras?"

"The nurses cleaned him?" Dad asks, as him, Steven and I walk towards the exit.

"To avoid any possible infections." Steven answers. "Said it's basic procedure."
