*your pov*
After Kenzie realized who I was she allowed me to change in to better clothes and caught me up to speed. I explained the short version of what had happened and explained that I would need to leave before the crew arrived. Instead of flying to my cabin like I would've done i walked allowing me to not only think but to take in the view I was use to seeing with Wyatt.
'What would he think of all this? If it had been me and not him- would he keep trying.'
I kept think over and over again until I came up to our shared home. It was smaller cabin with the roof almost touching the ground. The snow had built up all sides and I would have to dig out the door to even enter. I found a shovel leaning against the outside wall and started to dig my way through the snow. When the door was clean off and good to open i pushed the wooden door inwards and looked around the dark room. Nothing had changed from how we left it before we left for our last mission. In the corner was a small wood burning furnace that connected to the roof, we placed the bed not too far from it in order to stay warm during the worst of blizzards. I made my way towards the back of the house were there was a small bedroom. I had refrained from going in here for half a year and I wasn't sure if I should enter or not.
I turned away from it and went back towards the bed in the main room. Underneath it was a loose bord where I had hid the most important information I had collected. I lifted the bored and pulled out many folders until I found the one I was looking for. I opened the folder and found the many sheets of paper I had spent years trying to decipher. It was all poneglyph text that my friend had spent decoding, she came so close to finishing until the world government found out what she was doing. She was killed and her work was supposed to be destroyed. Key word supposed to none of us in the unit could bring ourselves to destroy what she had risked her life to accomplish. I took responsibility and told the other I had burned everything when in reality I hid the information away.
I couldn't read the text but, maybe if I finished what she started ill be able to know the full truth. I threw some dry wood into the furnace and started it up before climbing into the bed and spreading out the papers and started to study it in hopes to find a key to cracking this ancient code.
*Killer's pov*
After some convincing on Victor's side Kenzie lead us to the Marine base on the island.
"This is a first for us." Kid looked at me as if to explain.
"You know being invited into a Marine base and not in cuffs." Kenzie must of heard me cause she replied to my remark.
"This place is different, we're more loyal to Captain Talon and Commander Wyatt. They found this island and made it liveable for the towns people while giving a bunch of criminals like us a job."
"Us?" I was curious to know what she meant by that.
"Most of the men that work here are considered failures by marine standards and others had a choice between service or execution. She was given command over us as a punishment for her failure to follow orders." Her explanation made since but something bothered me about that fact.
"Why give her control over men who could turn against the Marine especially since she didn't follow orders?" Victor was the one to answer my question.
"Because she wasn't always like that. Believe it or not. Becoming a captain was a huge demotion compared to what we use to do. Her refusal to listen is out if anger."
'Demotion thats strange how does that work?'
"Okay I'm splitting your group Kid, Killer, and Victor will come with me to the main office while the rest of your group with a few of my men will help collect the necessary supplies. And don't take this the wrong way, we're compiling to avoid any of the citizens getting wrapped up in a battle and because she asked us to." Kenzie signaled for a couple of men to follow Heat and Cleaver as she lead us inside the base.
She lead us down long hallways that eventuall lead to stairs taking us to the second floor. All the doors we past were closed give us no clue where anything was. We reached a big door that she opened for us and let us in. There was a large glass door leading to a balcony, in front of the door was a large wooden desk with the Marine insignia carved into it. In the cornor was a bird perch and a huge white falcon sitting calmly watching us until we took our seats. I looked at Kid since he'd been silent since the docks, when I looked at him his eyes were dark and his arms crossed. I could feel his anger radiating off him.
"Uh- hey Kid-"
"Where is SHE?" He finally snapped and was looking for answers.
"You mean the Captain? At her house, she's getting your information. I'm supposed to call her when you all arrived, but I have my own agenda."
"So you're wasting my time for- what reason." I could see Kid slowly coming undone.
"Kid try to calm down."
"NO! I'm tried of being dragged around with no explanation and _____ has just disappeared and I have no idea where she is."
"Kid?"
"We- we have no idea where she is." He was stumbling over his words, something that doesn't ever happen to him.
"Well are you done?" Kenzie opened a cabinet and pulled a bottle out, she then pour everyone a glass. Kid wasted no time in picking it up and throwing the dark liquid back before sitting down.
"Now that everyone has calmed down a bit, I have a few questions. For starters what is happening on your ship were the captain feels the need to post guards at her room and office?" I had no idea what she was talking about, I hadn't noticed anything in particular.
"Oo I have the answers!" Victor stood from his seat and pulled out a piece of paper.
"I took it upon myself to search her room after she jumped ship, and you will not believe what I found. Okay for starters her room was impossible to stay in for long it smelled so bad and when I flipped her mattress there it was a huge blood stain! Most of it had been cleaned with chemicals but the smell was still there. In the cornor of her room was a bunch of he clothing that had been ripped into shreds and finally this piece of blank paper." He placed it on the desk and Kenzie picked it up.
"Do you know who's blood?" Kid was gripping his chair arm as Victor coutined to explain.
"Yeah some poor seagull the feathers were in a pillow case."
"And how do you know she just didn't kill the bird." I couldn't help but to ask.
"I dont know much about birds but don't big birds like owls attack other birds how do you think this matters."
"Because obviously you don't know the Captain that well! Shes not found of hurting animals and she makes a point that when they do die they don't suffer and it's not wasted. Trust me one of our men killed a rabbit for sport once and she about beat him to death then forced him to skin and use every part of it. Even the guts and bones were put to good use." Kenzie pointed out.
"What I'm curious about is this note. Its blank but I bet its invisible ink something I happened to know kenzie loves to play with." Victor handed the letter to kenzie as she unruffled it.
"Does this have anything to do with the ring you gave me earlier?" Kid reached into his pocket and pulled out the small jewelry. Kenzie shot up from her desk and made her way to him then snatched the ring from him.
"How did you get this?!?!"
"Calm down Kenzie I gave it to him earlier, he didn't take it. Whoever stole it is most likely the same person who left this note that I need you to make visible." He once again handed her that note as she accepted it and walked around the desk and lit a candle.
She held the sheet steady while running the fire underneath without it catching fire. I watched as ink began to appear on the otherside of the paper.
"This - This can't be right! How do- how did they know?!"
