Dust

From dust you were created
And unto dust you shall return.

All this- dust, i sweep off my floor/
throw out of my house
Everyday
i wash myself to wash away the dust
from which i was made.

These flowers you see,
which bloom in their full glory
Their mark in the air you breathe-
One day, they will wilt
and rest, into the soil.

The birds you cage,
these birds in my house-
They chirp, flap their wings
But only for while.

Or the ones that get to fly-
Don't shoot them,
they colour the sky
If only for a while.

i have these hands
Only for a while
To create something-
maybe my mark, to outlive me
If only for a while.

What have i to give
If not more dust
to this- dust?

These glitters that you see-
They are castles made of sand
on this barren land
i call mine
If only for a while.

What if the astrologers,
the night gazers
Don't make a constellation of your scars
Or even name one after you?

Would you still keep on burning
If it means getting lost
in this eternal sea of stars?

Or would you fall to earth
Be that star to be wished upon
If only for a while
till when you'll turn to dust?

How funny it is-
This noise,
these kids playing on the street
making their own castles made of sand,
filling this silence
with their laughter
If only for a while.

The love i give to you,
these dreams we weave together,
this hurt that bruises,
these colours i see-
i cannot grasp them in my hands

Would they live on,
floating in the air i breathe,
reach someone who grieves
and bring life to the dead?

Or would they, like me,
last for a while?
Live as long as hearts do
If only for a while
Till those hearts turn to dust
as all does at the end?

Your tears make my sea
To wade my feet in-
which run miles,
if only for a while
To chase what will turn to dust
will turn to dust themselves one day-
and wash away the dirt

The dirt in which the trees lie,
From which mountains fold,
that turns to grass
for the sheep to graze from
If only for a while.

...

if only for a while...
