Veronica, August 2000
Life returned to normal after Sam's visit, I went back to university with Lucas and Penny, who had managed to recuse their budding relationship from that one dating mishap and Bridget, begrudgingly went back to school, complaining as loud as she could every afternoon about how much she hated that 'institution of torture' and how she couldn't wait for the day when she could be free from that place.
Dad had received somewhat positive news, after his last round of chemo, that the growth of scarring in his lungs had only minor progression since his last check up, it wouldn't stay this way forever but it was enough to buy him some more time. It had been so hard on all three of us, watching his quality of life diminish slowly and feeling powerless to stop it, every day we edged closer to the day that we would lose him so we, along with the help of Aunty Celeste and Nick, started having weekly dinners at our house with one very big rule put in place, that the topic of asbestos was never to be brought up.
Kate received an email from Sam's cousin, Elizabeth, raving about how much she adored the clothing and asking if more samples could be sent over to the UK so that she could show her boss and get Kate featured within stores over there so Penny and I help Kate put together a some of her best items as well as a detailed portfolio that showcased everything she had made.
Sam and I had been emailing each other non stop since he left, making me miss him so much more but I was happy that we had repaired our friendship and the kiss that he had left me with made me really want to repair more. Our emails were friendly but full of flirtation that often boarded on crossing that line but the thought of him saying these things to me and then going out and doing them to some other girl was what was holding me back from trying again.
We'd only been back at school for a week when Gareth invited Penny, Lucas and I to his birthday party at his Grandparents house in the small country town of Riverville, about an hours drive from Claremont, which meant one of us would have to be designated driver for the night because taxi's refused to come that far out so I volunteered to drive us.
"How much alcohol did you bring?" I ask Penny, surveying the large overnight bag she trudged into my room with. We had made a plan to get ready together and then go pick up Lucas along the way.
"That's not all full of booze Roni, I packed an overnight bag incase Lucas asks me to stay at his tonight" She says shyly, a crimson blush creeping onto her pale cheeks. "I just thought, with it being our forth date and all he might ask, although I dropped a heap of hints on our third date about being ready to take that next step but he didn't pick up on them."
I found it weirdly surprising that Lucas hadn't slept with Penny yet, he was, after all, Lucas Stephenson, the guy lived for getting laid or at least he used to back before had his breakdown.
"I'm sure he's just wanting it to be perfect" Not that he ever actually cared in the past but I'd seen a strong change in him when he was around Penny, he became nervous at times and eager to please her.
"You've known him a long time though, is it possible that he's a virgin? I don't want to push him into losing it and scare him off" I can't even look at her right now out of fear that I will burst into laughter, instead I pretend to focus on my hair. Unfortunately Bridget just happened to be making her way back from the bathroom at that exact moment and had heard Penny's query, she comes into my room and flops herself down on my bed with a heavy thud.
"Who's a virgin?" Bridget asks Penny, keen to be in on our conversation.
"Lucas" Penny replies shyly, that blush on her cheeks has now become flaming hot red , which is only made worse when Bridget starts laughing loudly.
