Despite the villagers warning, Ethan pushed on. Besides, what else could he do? Sit around and wait until the BSAA and Blue Umbrella noticed their team has gone missing? If it wasn't for his daughter, he definitly would. But no, he needed to act and save her from whatever terrible fate waited her. She was his everything. And for her, he would risk everything.
He followed the trail up the hill towards the castle. The cold was getting worse, he felt it going under his skin and into his bones, despite being well dressed for the weather. After walking through a gravejard, he noticed some scarecrows along the way but as he walked passed them, he realised that they were actually people. They must have been hanging there for months. "Good God... what humans can do to each other." he said. That is, of course, if the owners of the castle were even humans to begin with.
As he approached the entrance, he saw a horse and a large carriage next to the trail, but he couldn't see anyone. He was about to ignore it and enter the castle when the window to the carriage was abruptly opened, revealing a corpulent man. "Ahhh I've been waiting for you, Mr. Winters."
Ethan's heart skippeda beat and after recovering from the initial shock, got closer to the strange man. "How do you know my name?" he asked.
The man grinned. It was a friendly grin, not an evil one. "Anyone who is anyone has heard of the likes of you."
"Right..." Ethan responded, remembering that the Werewolf leader had said his name as well. "It appears word travels fast around here."
"Indeed they are. Outsiders are rare. And they also rarely survive for long."
"I believe that..." Ethan gulped. "And who are you?"
"Ah my apologies." the man said and bowed. Ethan thought the guy would fall over, but he didn't. "They call me "The Duke". I'm the best merchant in this valley, travelling all over the place and offering my goods." He waved him closer. "Come and take look at my merchandise. It's always nice to get a new customer."
Ethan looked at the Duke's offer and saw some medicine and shotgun shells. Remembering that he had some currency with him, he paid for these items. The merchant greedily grabbed the coins. "A pleasure doing business with you Mr. Winters."
"Yeah, that will prove useful." Ethan said and stuffed the items away. "What are you doing all the way up here?"
"Ah, I sold some medicine to the ladies of the castle. They are some of my regular customers."
This caught Ethans attention. "So there are several ladies. Have you seen them then?"
The merchant laughed. "Oh no. I never speak with the ladies directly, the servants do the transactions. I've only caught glimpses of them once or twice, but I know there are four ladies residing in the castle. The Mistress, Lady Dimitrescu, and her three daughters."
