"Cause it's 3:00 a.m.
And I'm callin' everybody that I know
And here we go again
While I'm runnin' through the numbers in my phone
And yeah, I'll take fake moans and dial tones- ""Miles I said turn it down-" The 3 of us froze at the situation- Halsey's 3 am continuing to blast in the background as the situation played out. Miles' father, who was still supposed to be out of town for another 3 days, stood in the doorway of his bedroom. His bedroom held us, frozen from our past behavior of jumping around the room screaming along the lyrics to whatever song came on. The room was also filled with smoke and smelled of the weed we were currently high from. "What the hell is going on?!" Mr. Hollingsworth yelled it angrily, snatching the remote for the speaker off of Miles' bedside table shutting them off. Miles and I looked at each other in silence, before we burst out laughing, both our bodies doubling over into each other as we fell onto the floor in a fight of laughter. Throwing his fit of laughing, he took another hit from the joint in his hand before handing it to me. I did the same, before putting it out in the ashtray on the floor beside the end of his bed. "Only weeks into your senior year and you're already ruining it by getting high!" Neither of us have acknowledged his father at this point, and it was just added fuel to the fire. I may be high, but I still have a brain. "We're just really stressed, Mr. Hollingsworth." I try to explain, to be then cut off by Miles' cool tone... to calm for the situation. "Aren't you supposed to be out of town for another few days?" He questions, pulling himself to his feet standing shakely. "Miles, that isn't the point, what are you doing? You're ruining your life over here, and you were doing so well." "Well thank you for your once in a lifetime praise, however, we have places to be." He reached down grabbing a hold of my arm pulling me up to my feet with him, we had nothing to do... he's lying. "You're not going anywhere." Mr. Hollingsworth stepped in front of Miles blocking me, and Miles stiffened at the action. "Keep your hands off of me." He gritted his teeth and his father raised his arms, backing up... that was unexpected. Miles thought the same as he hesitated before grabbing his keys from the hook by his door before dragging me out of the room behind him. "Miles, where are we going?" I whine as he pulls me to the car, I have a headache, it always happens when we smoke. "For a drive, come on." "You're high, Miles. It's unsafe." "You can be my co-pilot." "But I'm also high-" "Kala, it will be fine!" I agreed because I trusted him.
As we begin to drive, I'm zoning in and out with my head against the car window. Miles is talking and I'm replying however, it all sounds like gibberish to me. I can't make anything out besides our laughs. I finally find it in me to pick my head up, and I see a car coming towards us, "Miles!-"Miles didn't know where he was, he heard sirens and people talking about blood pressure and medical things like that. He felt like he couldn't move, he felt something secure around his neck... What happened. He feels high, not as high as he remembers being but still high. Kala, where's Kala? "Kala." He whispered as loud as he could, his eyes began to open, however due to the bright lights of wherever he was, he reclosed them. "Open your eyes if you can." He heard a female voice say, a male voice saying something that he couldn't catch from the opposite side of him. "Kala." He stated louder now, forcing his eyes open to the light. He knows this sight all too well, it's an ambulance. "Son, can you tell me your name?" The male voice now spoke, the paramedics. "Miles." "Okay, Miles I'm going to need you to stay awake for me." When he first woke up, he felt as though he was in a post dream haze, one where you don't know what's happening, or if you're okay or not... if you're gonna wake up from it or not. Now, that's all it was... he was fine. All he had to do was wake up, he felt fine... a little sore, a little bit of a headache, however there was no need for a neck brace or an ambulance at that... he needed to know where Kala was. "I'm fine, I don't need this-" He goes to sit up, only to be pushed back down by the male. "I need you to stay laying down, we're almost to the hospital." Miles grunts, but chooses to stay down. "How are you feeling?" The woman asks. "Fine, I've been worse." Which was true, his withdrawal was worse than the pain he's feeling currently, after... whatever just happened. "What happened?" "You were involved in a car accident with another vehicle, you were driving on the wrong side of the road and you noticed too late... it seems like you tried to swerve, however the right side of your car got smacked by the other vehicle." The female explained to him as the male continued to check his blood and oxygen levels. At her description he springs up, only to be pushed gently back down, this time he fought. "The right side? Kala, what happened to Kala. Where is she? Is she okay?" They didn't reply and whispered back and forth to each other above him as he continued struggling. "Everyone in the accident survived." The male spoke calmly, trying to soothe Miles, although that didn't help much. The crash happened on her side of the vehicle. "What happened to the girl who was in the car with me?" "She's in another ambulance, she was steady when we left the scene." He had no time to ask anymore questions as the paramedics stood and got out of the ambulance, they were here. Miles' tried watching his surroundings, the all too familiar surrounds of the hospital. As they pushed him in slowly the voices of his parents and siblings began to bombard him. "Miles!" "Kala, I need to find Kala." He mumbled to himself, scanning his eyes around, when panicked and rushed voices came from the same direction he just came from. His ears perked up as he was parked in the gurney and the neck brace was removed, he stayed down... paying too much attention to the noises around him. "17 year old girl, car accident, blunt force trauma to the head, blood levels-'' At the small description he heard, he knew it was her. "Kala!" He jumped up trying to get a look at where she would be, before being pushed back down onto the table, and he fought. Hard. "Son, I need you to stay down!" Nurses yelled over him screaming his girlfriend's name. As he continued struggling more nurses came, before he knew it 4 nurses were holding against his fighting frame, and there was no sign of Kala.
"He might experience some soreness or headache, however besides that you should be good." 4 hours after being brought in, Miles sat impatiently bouncing his knee on his hospital bed as the doctor began to clear him. "Can you guys tell me what's going on with Kala now?" To get him to calm down the doctors promised him they'd tell him about Kala after they cleared him, now it was time for them to keep it. "I don't think that's a good idea-" Mrs. Hollingsworth began to speak, however her son cut him off. "Mom, I might have killed my girlfriend. I would really like to know how she is." He was blunt, it came out of nowhere and even scared him, however he turned back to the doctor with a brave face. He had no right to be the upset one right now. "Ms. Nicks just got out of surgery, she had blunt force trauma to the head due to the collision and is currently in a medically induced coma, we don't know when she'll wake up." Miles' air was taken from him at the word coma. First Tristan, now Kala. How could he have done this to her. "This is all my fault." Miles cried into his hands, his mom hugged her son however he was quick to push her away. "She warned me that we shouldn't have been driving but I pushed her, if she dies... it's going to be my fault." "She's going to be okay, Miles." He shook, his mom didn't say the words 'it's not your fault' because it was, there was no way around it. If Kala or the other person involved in the accident would have died, he would've been tried for manslaughter. Even at the thought, Miles turned green. Just last week the hospital held a little hope as Tristan grabbed Miles' hand while they told him about how well New York went and now here he was having to face that fact that another loved one is in a coma, only this time... it's his doing. "Miles!" Miles' brain processes the female voice as Kala, his head quickly turns and leads him to disappointment when he sees his sister standing in the doorway. "Tristan's awake!"He was avoiding it... the feeling, the same feeling he felt for the first time seeing Tristan in his state, but with Kala. He never wanted to have to experience that ever again. Seeing Tristan this way, as horrible as it sounded, was easier. He has weeks of it, he was prepared to see Kala in this position. It was easier to be sat besides a muted Tristan, and retell him all the things Kala and him have told him since the bus crash then to walk into Kala's room and see the aftermath of what he's done. It wasn't until Tristan had to sleep, that he had to face the repercussions of his actions. Her mom couldn't stay overnight, she had to be with Oliver and had nowhere for him to go. Oliver couldn't be here in the hospital for days on end and couldn't be left alone. Mrs. Hollingsworth volunteered to stay with Kala, it was the least she could do for the trouble her toronado of a son has caused, Miles' words not his mom's. His phone was off in his pocket, the buzzing of everyone asking about Tristan and then on top of that him and Kala was too much, he didn't want to have to face her friends who have already basically lost Tristan and now see them lose Kala, even if it's just for a week or 2. He felt like he couldn't move, when he found himself in the crackled doorway of Kala's hospital room and he saw her for the first time under the harsh lighting of the bedside lamp. His mom sat lounged in the chair on the opposite side of the room, sensing her son's presence, she turned to him. "Miles, come in. It's late." She whispered opening the door a little more letting Miles close it quietly behind him. He stood with his back flush to the door, he felt like he couldn't look at the aftermath of his stupidity. It wasn't as bad as the first time he saw Tristan post surgery. She didn't have a breathing tube down her throat, just a nasal cannula like most people do in the hospital. She looked as though she was just sleeping, it made it an easier pill to swallow. Mrs. Hollingsworth studied her son's movements as he moved slowly across the room to the chair just beside Kala's bed, grabbing a hold of her hand. It's when the tears restarted for the boy. She felt cold, she never felt cold when Miles held her hand. Her nervousness, even months into their relationship, always made her palms warm and most of the time a little sweaty. Now she just seemed like a zombie of Kala and not actually Kala Nicks.
