james awoke the next morning way before anyone else, despite the late night he'd had. he found it extremely draining to cry, which is how he ended the previous day; crying to remus about everything that had happened between him and regulus

it was a strange thing for him to think back on. usually he was the friend doing the comforting not the one being comforted. it felt odd and foreign to picture himself clinging to remus as he cried and mumbled incoherent sentences. it was even more odd to imagine remus handling it the way he did. it felt like a very very bad dream in hindsight

between the late night and the general sleepiness his sadness brought him he was surprised his body still woke him up early. even though he felt like he had not slept in weeks he pulled himself out of bed for the day rubbing his eyes trying to force them open

after finding the strength to brush his teeth, shower, change his clothes, and leave the dorm he found himself outside enjoying the weather. taking a morning walk had become a usual weekend routine for him. he could clear his head and recharge while his friends slept in

today was like every other saturday morning until he saw regulus. deep down he was hoping to see him, so he could apologize. but now as regulus stood fifty feet ahead of him, james felt like crawling into a hole and pretending he didn't exist

despite this, he swallowed his pride 'to be a better you' ( now included righting your wrongs ) and made his best effort to catch regulus before he could run away for the millionth time that week

"reg," james called jogging to catch up to regulus

james heard regulus huff as he sped up trying to get away from him

"regulus please," james begged as he got close enough that regulus would have to stop now. "im sorry."

just as james thought, regulus stopped and whipped himself around. he shoved his hands into the pockets of his trousers rocking back and forth on his feet

after a few moments of staring at each other in silence he raised his eyebrow at james as if to say 'get on with it'

"look, i really should have given it more thought before i said it. it was wrong and rude and completely uncalled for. i dont even know why i said it," james rambled scratching the back of his neck nervously

regulus stood grinning at him, almost laughing a bit too as james rambled every last thought to him out loud

"truthfully i dont give damn if you lie or not cause you dont owe me the truth. and i sort of like it when you lie. not the point james," he carried on. "regulus im so sorry, thats really what im trying to say here."

james stood in agony as regulus just stared at him in silence with a devious smirk on his face

"you just cant stay away from me, can you potter?" regulus asked his grin growing while he shook his head

james chuckled feeling relieved. "youre infuriating, black"

"missed me, huh?" regulus said as they sat down underneath a tree side by side

"something like that, yea" james replied slouching against the trunk of the tree

regulus smirked, "and you wanna pretend im the obsessed one."

"no, but you missed me. even if you wont admit it. i know you did," james boasted

regulus shrugged, "so what if i did. at least its mutual."

"lucky us," james chuckled

there was a subtle warm breeze flowing through the air this morning. they could hear the quiet rustling of the leaves and voices of other students off in the distance

james tilted his head to the side to peer over at regulus. as he stared at him, he watched his fluffy dark hair bounce in the wind and the sun make the blue in his eyes shine through the grey

he didnt realize it but he about half fell in love with regulus right then n there. and he was even more unaware of the fact that regulus was falling too

regulus tilted his head to hold james's stare. reg rolled his eyes at james who was making faces at him. he reached over and playfully shoved james's headed away causing both of them to laugh

"what are we doing," regulus asked in between their laughs

"does it matter? were happy, arent we? cant that be enough for now," james replied casually

"for now," regulus agreed leaning back his hands holding himself up

james shifted from leaning against the tree to laying his head in regulus's lap. he saw a wave of panic wash over reg but it was soon replaced with a relaxed and pleased look. regulus was glowing

"are you ever gonna stop disappearing on me?" james asked sincerely

"is that what you want?" regulus asked

"its nice having you around," james admitted blushing a bit. "you're good company, you know."

"hmm well i find you to be a bit a annoying," regulus teased

james sighed, "when you just disappear it makes me think i did something wrong."

"you did"

"the other times you prat. i know why you disappeared this last time," james groaned

regulus chuckled, "its me james. its never been about you or what you did or didnt do. its just me."

there was a trace of guilt and sadness in regs voice and he could see the frown beginning to form on his lips

james nuzzled his head closer to regulus before saying, "youve got nothing to be ashamed of. im all in, i mean really all in."

"thats nice," regulus started. "but you deserve better than me. and my secrets. and my family. and my life."

"thats not for you to decide," james replied sitting up to face reg

regulus's eyes shot down desperately trying to avoid james's. he put a hand on regs shoulder giving a tight squeeze

"come here," james embracing regulus into a tight hug. regulus clung onto james like his life depended on it. reg hid his face in james's shoulder

"lie to me all you want reg," james coed softly rubbing his back. reg just squeezed james tighter at this

"cause you're my favorite liar"
