**this is a nerdy ramble on cognitive functions/mbti. feel free to skip this chapter, i don't mind :)!
cognitive functions are an important part of mbti!! they are the foundation!!
i really wish i got into them sooner cuz my lack of knowledge on them is the reason my knowledge on mbti in general used to be so shit :') i was bad at typing most people cuz i was using the most basic stereotypes for the types (e vs i, s vs n, etc, and whatever tumblr told me).
like, without knowing about cognitive functions, i thought that the difference between an infj and infp is that infjs are more structured (which is generally true, but it was a silly assumption based off a simple j vs p outlook). when you look at the cognitive functions, infjs do not share any of the same functions as infps. the infj function stack is ni > fe > ti > se, and the infp function stack is fi > ne > si > te. so, if you were to look at the types superficially, you'd assume that infjs and infps are very similar when they are very different.
the sad thing is that a lot of the people who have an interest in mbti and know about cognitive functions only have a very loose understanding of cognitive functions.
the thing about functions is that you can't just know what the functions mean differently, but you need to be aware of what loops, grips, and shadow functions are. people try using cognitive functions on the understanding that everyone is a 100% healthy, untroubled individual and exercises their functions exactly like their function stack is for their type.
your dominant function is the function that is most developed in your early years of childhood, and it's the one that you've probably used when it comes to the big accomplishments in your life or where you made a lot of progress.
knowing the cognitive functions now, it's very clear that i've always been an ni-dom. i had relied on introverted intuition when i was younger, and it was def my most developed function. my biggest accomplishments also really have come from just absorbing information and having accurate intuitions. it's really helped me become happier in life :) i also realize that this paragraph doesn't really show that well that i'm an ni-dom. i could go into a lot of depth, but i won't do that here lmao.
the sad thing is that i was stuck in an ni-ti loop for like, pretty much my whole life. i've been working on getting out of it, and i've made progress.
also, idk what even started it, but i stopped trusting my intuitions to the point that it became an impulsive reflex to ignore them, and it has caused me a lot of unnecessary stress >:') i really hope to figure out how to fix it.
may i add that being in an ni-ti loop while having really bad rsd as a child created a monster of a person :') there are a lot of things i won't be able to forgive myself for and fully move on from what i did in the past.
anyway, i hope to get into enneagrams one day. my knowledge on them is so minimal, much like cognitive functions until recently.
if you want to understand your mbti type a bit better, i recommend doing your own research on cognitive functions :)! you can learn a lot about yourself and your mental processes.
