Present day
"I know she's really good, I loved her cover of Video Games." Courtney said.
"Wait, who are we talking about?" Katya asked, having just rejoined the conversation after getting another drink.
"Oh just a YouTuber, she does like makeup videos, covers and some original music. She's got a really nice voice tho, and really pretty lyrics. She's just recently started to blow up, I think she's at a little more than a million subs now." Courtney explained.
"I see, well it's not really my thing, but what's her name?"
"Trixie Mattel." Bimini said.
Katya felt her eyes go wide and her heart stop. There was no way. There was no way that the girl she hadn't seen for fifteen years was the same girl her friends were subscribed to. She had imagined it so many times, that fate would send the Barbie in her direction, but she never actually believed that it would happen.
"T-trixie Mattel? Are you sure? Is that her real name?" Katya asked in a rushed voice, the girl suddenly feeling completely sober.
"Yeah, or well, I think her real name is like Beatrice or something, but Mattel is her last name." Tatianna spoke.
"Can you please find her channel?"
"Yeah, sure. Don't know why you're suddenly so interested in a YouTuber tho... you're normally annoyed when we talk about social media people." Courtney said as she pulled up Trixie's channel.
"Yeah, you alright babes? You're not getting sick, are you?" Bimini said whilst dramatically pretending to check Katya's temperature.
"I'm fine. I just need to.." Katya started, but she lost her train of thought entirely as Trixie's voice sounded out from Courtney's phone. "Holy shit... it is her."
Her hair was different, the pink gone and exchanged for blonde, and her skin had gotten a warmer glow, like a Malibu Barbie. The crooked smile had remained tho and the honey brown eyes, as had the bunny teeth, and her engaging personality. And then she started to sing, and even tho it was barely audible over the music at the bar, Katya felt transported back to a time when Trixie would bring her guitar to the beach and sing for her.
"You act like you know her or something." Tatianna said.
"I do... or well, I did."
"What? Really? You know Trixie Mattel?" Bimini said in shock.
"Yeah, we... we went to school together for a year." Katya said, still unable to look away from the screen.
Somehow the years had only made Trixie more beautiful, she'd grown into her body more and her cheeks had rounded out a little. She looked stunning, Katya thought.
"Were you close?" Courtney asked.
"Pretty close, she was pretty much my reliable ride or die back then. I haven't spoken to her in fifteen years tho."
"You should DM her, she's on Instagram!" Tatianna said.
"I can't do that." Katya replied.
"And why is that?" Bimini questioned.
"It's been fifteen years, and she's the one who stopped calling me! If she wanted me in her life, she would have kept in touch."
"Babes.. have you ever considered that she could have lost your number and that you are quite literally the hardest person to find online?" Bimini told her as if she was the dumbest person alive.
"No but-"
"No buts, except the sexy kind, you're gonna DM Trixie." Tatianna said.
"And why would I do that?"
"Because the closest thing you have to a relationship at the moment is a plastic head named Tabitha, and Trixie is the very definition of your type. Also you have not been able to stop staring at the screen since we started playing that video." Courtney told her.
"I'm not looking for a relationship, and especially not with Tabitha, she is my daughter, thank you very much." Katya argued.
"Well then go get laid, she's hot af and still single according to what she's said online." Tatianna said.
That shut Katya up entirely because she hadn't ever seen it as a real possibility that Trixie could still be single. Not that Katya thought the doll would ever actually go for her, but it was still surprising.
How could it be that Trixie was a minor celebrity and still single?
Why?
So that night, after a few more rounds of drinks, Katya sat down on her couch, logged into CherylTabithaAndMe and typed up a message.
Hey
I don't know if you remember me, it's been over a decade so I wouldn't blame you for forgetting me. But some friends of mine showed me your YouTube channel, and I just, I had to reach out. Sorry if it's an intrusion or something, or if I did something stupid that made you stop talking to me back then. But yeah, I just wanted to say hi I guess.
Hope you're doing good, Barbie.
