Part 8
Avan took me to the parking lot to cool off. I felt the early September air hover over my skin, calming me down. I took another deep breath trying to keep my breathing at a normal rate. I leaned causally against Avan's car and placed my hands over my head. Ever since we exit the school, my chest opened up, allowing me to breath regularly. I could feel my eyes welling up and I successfully pushed the unwanted tears back.
I had to admit, I was extremely embarrassed that Avan saw me like that. Especially since I was going to beat up his sister. I was however, grateful that he stopped me from hurting her. Sydney was right, Arianna wasn't worth it. No matter how much I wanted to punch her face in for betraying me like that.
"I'm sorry Avan. I don't know what happened." I said quietly. He took a step closer to me and brought his hand out to my face and slowly ran his thumb over my cheek. I could feel him wipe away a lone tear as it treaded down my rosy cheek.
"Dont appologize, I get it. When you're mad you do crazy stuff," He said simply. I was shocked. He seemed very calm about the situation. I was just about to beat up his sister! Why wasn't he mad?
"Yeah I know, but....I." I couldn't speak. My words were getting caught in my throat. I could feel the tears coming again. I quickly turned away from him and leaned my stomach against his car.
"Aww come on. It's fine." He said, turning me around and pulling me into his arms. My face was against his chest, soaking his shirt with my tears. I could hear his heartbeating faster and faster, in perfect unision with mine. I took a deep breathe and nose soon filled with the sweet natural scent of him; coconuts with aftershave. Weird but I liked it.
"Thank you," I whispered into his shirt.
My voice was muffled so I wasn't surprised when he pulled me back and asked, "What was that?"
"I said thank you for saving me from beating up your sister." I said shyly.
Avan smiled and pulled back into his arms. "I couldn't let you do that to yourself or Arianna."
I shifted my head so I could speak clearly. "I know, but just so we are clear, I hate your sister."
"I kind of figured that." He shrugged.
A part of me was waiting for Avan to let go of me and walk back to his sister, but he kept his arms tightly around me. He slowly stroked my back in a calm motion. I closed my eyes and listened to Avan's steady heartbeat.
Maybe I could trust Avan after all. He wasn't making a judgement on how badly I acted just now. Instead, he is with me. Something that I'm sure Derek wouldn't do for me.
I slowly let myself slip deeper into Avan's arms, giving into his tight embrace. Avan was here and that was all that mattered.
For some reason, I started crying again. Because of what Arianna did? Because of how everything was laying out front of me? Because the only person that I wanted with me was here? I don't know. All I could feel was the tears trailing down my cheek and onto Avan's already wet shirt.
Avan started running his hands soothingly through my tangled hair. I let out a quiet sob.
He then pressed his lips to my forehead. "I'm so sorry...I should of told you first. You didn't deserve to find out this way." He said, his mouth right by my ear.
I pulled away from his embrace. "You knew?" I choked out. "You knew and you didn't tell me!"
"Riley, please." He reached for my arm again but I retracted my arm from his grasp.
