Evie had never meant for it to happen. That was a general excuse many seemed to give when things went wrong. But she truly didn't mean it this time. She just didn't want to be kept in an apartment when her friends were having fun in one of their pool houses because she was grounded for a couple of bad grades.
Her dad's business was failing, and despite her enrollment in one of the best private schools nearby, Evie was nothing like her friends. And so, whilst they would have to hop the walls around their gigantic homes, Evie had snatched money from her dad's wallet whilst he was on one of his lengthy business calls and crawled out of the fire escape.
And she turned up to the party with several packs of cigarettes and beer and was ready to have fun. Except it didn't end that way. She didn't know who had done it, whether it had been her or one of the others there, but the pool house had ended up catching on fire.
Her leg had been burned pretty badly - a section of her thigh blistering when the ambulances and police arrived. And in a mess of tears, guilt and pain, she had given them her dad's number when they asked for her guardian. Rather than just one of her friend's parents who were much more chilled out than Christopher Hayden.
The burn hadn't been bad, luckily. But the look that she got from her father when he picked up was far worse. They barely talked, the upset and disappointment evident on his face. But when he said his goodnights to her, locking her in her bedroom (the window was shut this time), Evie knew that she was going to get it in the morning - and by 'get it' she meant kicked out.
She couldn't sleep and convinced herself in all senses of the word that that would be the case. Her father was going to kick her out. So, she decided to leave before he could. She had one destination in mind. Stars Hollow.
Upon her arrival, several things were clear. Not a lot had changed since her last visit. But two things had. Rory now went to Chilton, and Luke's nephew - who hated absolutely everything about the stupid town - had taken up occupancy of the room above Luke's Diner.
Stars Hollow didn't change often. But when it did, it was rather impactful. Which was exactly how one would describe Jess Mariano's arrival, followed soon by Evie Hayden's.
