The color — a design of complete crimson — was what set the girl apart, earning her whispers, double-takes, and side-eyes whenever it was visible. It seemed that in the world of fated pairings, a blemish of any shade other than plain black was something to behold and treasured; Era's was no exception.

Rumors claimed that vibrant hues meant greatness and even then, a mark of full color stood out. Its bearer almost always found themselves placed on a pedestal, an ever-present spotlight highlighting their every strength and flaw for the rest of their days. They were declared special without their consent, and were often judged for it.

With such big shoes to fill, Era would've been a liar to say those standards weren't a burden. They were heavy and cumbersome, but she took the strain in stride with a grin and a skip. Even the attention she got, as unwelcome and unwanted as it was, didn't seem to bother her as much as it did others.

Perhaps the support of her family helped Era cope; perhaps the easily concealable placement of her marking (between her shoulder blades) helped her sense of security. Whatever the reason, the girl survived and grew up as cheerful as any other child. She almost never went a day without a bright smile or kind word, her nature best described as nurturing by those around her.

She kept her caring persona even after her first sensitivity manifested. It was early on her sixteenth birthday as a young Era slept soundly in her cocoon of blankets that she first felt it — or rather, heard it. The rest itself had been calm and pleasant, filled with hope and excitement, only to be shattered completely when the harsh tones of Iron Maiden forcibly yanked the girl from her slumber.
