Toni let out a chuckle that only came out dry and forced. Her mum and Yeni looked at her again, asking her if she was okay with their eyes. Now who the hell asked her to join in the laughter? But she didn't want it to feel like she had zoned out, and that was basically all she has been doing for the past three days, since the day she had gotten back from her doctor's appointment and gotten the one news that would changed her whole existence.
"I'm sorry, Dr. Charles, but can you repeat yourself," Toni said with fear, her heart beating a heavy bass into her ears.
The doctor smiled lovingly and repeated what he had said. "Well Miss Davies, it turns out that you're pregnant. Thirteen weeks gone to be precise."
Toni sat back in her chair, resigning herself to fate. That would mean she had being carrying this child in her for more than three months now. Three months of her not hearing a word from Nasir, three months of her putting off her work back at New York just so she could wait for him. A part of her feared that he had dumped her also, like others did, but another part of her wanted to believe that he was too preoccupied, but still he should be able to call. She hadn't being able to reach him on his phone either, this only increased her fear that something bad could have happened to him. She hadn't being able to forget him, no day went by when she didn't think of him, or anticipated his return, and not once did he show up. And everyday as she waited, a part of her soul dies. But now that she was carrying his child, what would she do? She felt tears clustering at her eyes as her hand went over to her still very flat tummy.
"But how? I was on the pills." She asked no one in particular, but was grateful when the doctor gave a reply.
"Sometimes pills do fail because of some very minute things, Miss Davies," he said, his smile not faltering for once. "I'll advice you to register for antenatal as soon as possible, although your baby seems to have being growing fine."
"Thank you, Dr. Charles." She made to stand up, but the doctor's voice stopped her.
"Are you going to tell your mum, she seems to be really worried about you," Dr. Charles said, now sounding like the Uncle Charles she grew up knowing.
Doctor Charles has being their family doctor even before Toni herself was born, he was the one who aided her birth, and that of Yeni also. He had being their father's best friend since childhood, and naturally she and Yeni had grown up referring to him as an Uncle.
"I will, Uncle, but not now," she said. She just couldn't put this much stress on her mum now, although she knew her mum would be elated at the prospect of a grandchild since she was twenty five already, but she didn't have any man to show forth. So she would prefer to keep it secret until she has figured out what to do with her life. "Can you keep this little secret for me, Uncle Charles."
"You didn't have to ask me, Omotoni. I'll do this without you asking." He placed his hand on hers in a show of support. "But you should tell her soon. Ibukun only loves you, we all do. And with the way Ibukun said you've being acting lately, we fear that there might be a repeat of what happened six years ago."
"I'm way past that, Uncle, you have nothing to worry about." Toni reassured with a smile, and got up. "Bye."
Toni's facial expression was blank as she replayed her meeting with Uncle Charles in her head, her hand unconsciously went over to her tummy. She has being doing a lot of that this three days, it's as if she was trying to confirm if there was a baby there like the doctor said. She even found herself talking to her stomach unintentionally, it soothed her pain. That there was someone there that belonged to her, made her feel a little bit whole, even though this person was just a small bump unknown for now.
