Jane Harper was more than what people saw. Her coworkers saw her as ruthless and closed off. She had only ever lost 4 cases in her 3 year career. She was 26 years old, and never seemed to laugh at any of the jokes her colleagues would tell, they never seemed to make any sense to her but they weren't sure why.

Once a month after work, like clockwork the office would watch a movie, usually at their bosses house. Everyone seemed to be afraid of declining to go to his house, as he was old and in charge of their pay checks. Although Mr. Fromer was a kind man that Jane had known since before becoming a lawyer. He lived right next to the office, so it wasn't much of an ask for his employees to come to his house. His house was one that smelled like years of living, with flattened carpet where people would always walk, that hadn't been replaced since the fifties. An old leather couch that would appear in old photographs and still look the same. And a Tv from the eighties, one of the youngest things in the house, besides the cable box that had been half hazardously put up. The room was dark, except for the light from the lights in the kitchen, which cascaded through the doorway. A collection of spoons were placed along the wall, it was his wife and his collection that they got from traveling over the years. Some of the spoons had some sort of rust that Jane had urged herself not to clean.

Jane sat on the floor, on an unflattened area of the carpet near a table filled with grocery bags of empty cans. Everyone else was either sitting on the couches or standing as their boss went through his cases of VHS tapes. He pulled out one that she couldn't read from where she was sitting.

He popped it into the VHS player and smiled to his employees before sitting on the chair that once belonged to his wife. The death of his wife had hit him hard, as it did Jane, since the woman had shown her kindness and had taken her in when Jane had lost her mother.

The box shaped TV turned on and a black and white screen appeared, it had more Sepia than anything. A cloudy sky was shown and the titled appeared on the screen. "THE WIZARD OF OZ"

"Oh no." She muttered to herself. She had managed to avoid that movie for ten years, but she couldn't avoid it now.

It was weird, and she didn't like it much. As she suffered through the movie, her phone began to ring as the witch was writing "Surrender Dorothy". She walked outside through the sliding glass doors and through the back porch room. "Hello?" She asked.

"Jane" The voice she recognized as Emma said, she really had to start checking who was calling when she answered her phone. She hadn't talked to her since the previous week since she stopped by and had a quick dinner. Today was Emma's birthday, and Jane was planning to come over after work. "Something happened, I don't think you'll be able to stop by."

As she was about to ask why she heard the voice of a young boy, "Emma who's there with you? Are you in trouble?"

"I might be." Emma sighed. She could here the boy again, but couldn't tell much of what he said except for 'we need to-' "I'll call you when I get back."

Jane looked around the backyard in contempt, "Alright, bye" She hung up the phone and turned back towards the house, to watch the rest of the movie.
