Mama say,
Baby sit down so I can redo your hair
Let me tell you some other things you might need to hear.
Mama say,
Grab the box with all the bows and burettes
And also go and grab the box with the comb setsI grabbed the comb set and sat criss cross
And thats when she told me we took a big loss
I asked her what she meant & she looked at me
Mama say,
With tears in her eyes that we wont be seeing daddy.Mama what you mean?
I say with my eyes tearing on their own.
Mama say,
The cops are going to reap what they've sown
That whats when it hit,
what she was trying to say
That the cops had killed my daddy
They took my daddy away! Why do they hate us?
I asked with tearful eyes
Momma couldn't say anything,
Instead, she looked down and cried.
She parted my hair down the middle and paused to say,
She was going to give me rules that I have to follow to go and play.Mama say,
Keep your hands up and visible
The cops already think that we are divisible
Crossing us as if we were some kind of reciprocal.
Making racist jokes that all are stereotypicalMama say,
Dont raise your voice at any cop like authority
They already claim us to be the minority
They already say our lives are not priority
So don't add to the reasons,
they shoot us as if we have a life warranty.Mama grabs the bows and put them in my hair
She paused and gave my head a long stare
Tearful eyes with a glint of small pride
She went into detail on how my daddy had diedShe wasted no time to try and sooth my hurting heart
Telling all his good stories, to give my heart a jumpstart.
Momma finished my hair then paused to say,
Baby do you understand all the rules to play?
Then she grabbed my hands and began to pray
God shield my kids and give them someplace safe to play.
