Chapter 15

NICK’S P.O.V

Being in the country is not going as great as I planned. My plans were to go home straight to have a serious conversation with Tara and to also spend time with her, we can also go shopping for the babies, I can’t wait to spoil my girls. But my secretary had other plans in mind, first I had an impromptu meeting with my investors on a new branch we were working on. Then the MDs of the existing branches requested a meeting with me and I was occupied with work I had left hanging when I went for my unplanned vacation.

By the time I was finally able to leave work it was late at night, almost mid-night. I drove home and walked in expecting everyone at home to be asleep but I was surprised to find them awake.
Tara, Sharon and Alfred they were sitting cozily enjoying a movie together. They were engrossed in their movie that they didn’t hear me enter, I called out Sharon’s name telling her I am home.

She jumped up and ran to give me a big bear hug and I ruffled her head the way I always did and she smiled back at me.  The only family I have around me and I love her.

Alfred came over to give me a handshake and I friendly patted his shoulder. Tara greeted me and gave me a tight smile, I assume she is still mad at me, i deserve that. Sharon invited me to join them but I was too tired, I declined their offer and went to my room to get the rest I much needed.

I woke late this morning, I had overstressed myself the previous day, I called my secretary to inform her to clear my schedule for the day, I will be taking today off. After that, I went to shower and wore comfortable clothes.

I went down the kitchen to get food, I was already smelling something nice on my way down the stairs. I got to the kitchen and I saw Tara and Sharon eating breakfast on the island, they were laughing over something and generally enjoying themselves. But the minute Tara spotted me she stopped abruptly and excused herself.

I sat with Sharon while Joy served me breakfast. We continued eating in silence and I was happy Sharon didn’t mention Tara's behavior. Sharon finished her food, carried her and Tara’s abandoned plates, washed her hands and made to leave the kitchen, but she turned and sat beside me, I knew what she was going to say but I feigned ignorance and gave her a questioning look

“So, are you going to tell me what you did to offend Tara?” she said with a knowing look, I hate when Sharon gets like this, it never ends well.

“Sharon, maybe you can help me ask her what the attitude is all about.” I was trying to act ignorant but Sharon knows me too well

“Really? You wanna go with that? If I go up there and I find out that you had anything to do with all this you will not like the outcome. So which is it going to be, you wanna consider spilling?” she asked. It was hopeless arguing with Sharon when she’s bent on having her way she always gets it.

”I kissed Tara” I said shamefully avoiding Sharon’s eyes out of shame. I knew what would follow, scolding and lecture on how wrong it was, so i braced myself for her words.

“Wow! I wasn’t expecting to hear that, but tell me what did you do after?”. This i never expected.

“Nothing, I just acted like it never happened. I realize my mistakes now though and I plan to rectify it once I’ve had my breakfast”

“And how do you plan on rectifying it if I may ask?” Sharon asked

“I intend to apologize to her, what I should have done earlier on and tell her it is never going to repeat itself" i hope it never repeats itself again.

“Nick, look, Tara is in a complicated state of mind and I will appreciate if you do not add your troubles to it. Please do not toy with her feelings and do not take advantage of her” Sharon said dead serious.

“I promise not to Sharon. Now you tell me what happened between you and mother, she called me to tell me you have been ignoring her calls.” It was nice to finally end that conversation.

“I do not want to talk about mother and I do not want to see her. Whenever she calls you again you can ignore her like you always did” Sharon said angry now, I wonder what mother did to annoy her so but atleast it would get her off my back.

“Okay, if you insist” I wasn’t ready to pry, if she doesn’t want to talk, then it's fine.

“And Nick, can I stay here a little longer, till I get a place of my own, please?” she was pleading with her eyes and when she does that I find it hard to deny her anything

“Okay, you can stay as long as you want, just try not to cause trouble’” I said resignedly. She hugged me squealing in my ears and left the kitchen. 

Finally, peace. Now one more to go

I went to Tara’s room and knocked on her door gently, she called that I enter. Tara was standing by the mirror checking out herself, more her bump, she placed her hand on her belly protectively. She was wearing a short and sports bra. I made to excuse her and come back later, I was by the door when she said to me thinking I was Sharon

“Sharon why are you quiet? Isn’t this beautiful? I mean the beauty of caring another soul in you and now there are two souls” she said, now I have to talk before things got too awkward

“Erm, Tara it is me, Nick” I said awkwardly. 

She spin around so fast and tripped, I had to hurriedly catch her to steady her.  Standing so close to her I can see her beautiful brown eyes and I felt a tug in my heart. She is beautiful and glowing.

My eyes trailed down to her chest heaving from her fast intake of breath, her breast looks full from the sports bra…

Nick, get a hold of yourself man. You do not want to go down that lane.

I helped her sit on the bed and went to sit in the single couch in the room. We sat in silence and it was so uncomfortable that I had to break the silence

“Tara, I am here to apologize about the last time, it was rude of me to have taken such priviledge and I am deeply sorry"

“It’s okay, all is forgiven, is that all?” she said but I doubt she honestly means that.

“And I want to make it up to you, why not let us go shopping for baby clothes. On that note, I called your doctor and she told me you are expecting twins and I am really happy it has all turn out fine” I said smiling and she smiled back. Maybe she really has forgiven.

I stood up to leave and said “please get dressed and I'll inform Sharon too so we can all go together. Tara thank you, for everything, I really can’t thank you enough” I left the room with a smile on my face, things are finally looking up.
