*Continued from last chapter*

"What are you doing here?" Meredith asked, trying her best to keep her voice in a whisper.

Derek sat in the chair next to her, dreading having walked into the classroom so late. If he had gotten there earlier, he wouldn't have to sit next to her. "I swear I'm not following you okay, here look." Derek pulled out his schedule from his backpack and handed it to her.

Meredith scanned the paper with her eyes, releasing a short chuckle after.

"What?"

"Nothing, we have next period together too." Meredith said as she handed him back his schedule.

The professor walked into the classroom and placed his coffee on his desk, "My name is on the board, you don't have to try to pronounce it, you can just call me Mr. M instead. I don't like seating charts but I hope you like where you're sitting because those will be your seats for the rest of the year, and the person next to you will be your partner for the rest of the year."

Meredith slowly looked over at Derek, he did the same. This was going to be a long year. The class went by and it wasn't completely dreadful. They didn't speak to each other but the silence was loud enough for the both of them. They were scared to move and accidentally touch each other. They couldn't spend all year like this, they knew that.

The class was dismissed and Derek left out the door as quickly as he could. Meredith followed after him.

"Hey," Meredith yelled, catching up to Derek.

"Hi," he smiled.

"I don't want things to be, you know, awkward. We had sex. It's no big deal. We can be friends or whatever."

"Friends, I like that." Derek smiled.

"Good." Meredith smiled back at him as they walked to their next class.

They went to class. They didn't talk much, a few stolen glances and longing stares but that was all. Derek couldn't help but watch her, they were under a different light and yet she was still so beautiful. When Derek wasn't looking she couldn't help but stare too, he was quiet and reserved but she knew he was just refraining from saying everything on his mind. They were still so curious about each other. They knew so much yet nothing at all.

Their class was dismissed and Derek hurried to walk with Meredith.

"So... you're serious about this friends thing."

Meredith looked at Derek, "I mean, yeah. Unless you're secretly like in love with me after last night," Meredith joked.

"Me? God no. I would understand if you were in love with me. I was amazing last night," Derek winked.

Meredith laughed and hit Derek's shoulder playfully. They walked to an empty spot on the grass. Meredith lay her sweater down and sat down. Derek did the same.

"So do you have a girlfriend?"

"Wha- I thought we were just being friends?" Derek laughed.

"We are, we are. I was just making conversation."

"Well I slept with you, I'm not a cheater."

"I slept with you and I have a boyfriend."

"What? You do?" Derek asked, shocked.

"Kidding," Meredith laughed.

Derek couldn't help but laugh with Meredith, "Oh you. You're good."

"I know," Meredith giggled as she laid down on the grass. Derek laid down next to her. Meredith stared at the sky with wide doe eyes. Derek turned his head to look at her, she was still fixed on the sky. Her beauty was unmatched, something he had never seen before. Meredith turned her head and their eyes met. They truly had a connection. They didn't know if it was platonic or not but it was strong. It was modest and mysterious. Meredith smiled and so did he.

"I can't believe we've never met before," Derek said.

"I've seen you around," Meredith said as she got up and put on her sweater.

"What? Why didn't you talk to me?"

Meredith ignored him and grabbed her backpack.

"I'll see you tomorrow Derek," Meredith said as she leaned down and kissed his cheek.

"Meredith!"

Meredith smirked back at him as she walked away. Derek was left curious, almost flattered. Why hadn't she talked to him before? Did she think he was a complete loser? Was she intimidated? Did she think he was cute? Derek had a billion questions swarming his brain but the one that kept racking his brain over and over was, why did he care?
