"Just make sure I'm the first you call."
---You were a relatively small country, a simple island somewhere off the coast of Europe, one filled with lots of resources and stability. It was no secret that many countries wanted to be your friend or form an alliance with you. You remember how full your desk always was whenever you would enter your office, now some of it was actual paperwork related to your nation, but most of the time it was letters and invitations from your fellow European countries asking you to sit in a meeting or to maybe meet some friends of theirs.
And you always politely declined.
You knew what they were trying to do, it seemed friendly at a glance, but when you put in context, you understood they were just trying to rope you into joining or helping them. Now sometimes it was out of friendly gestures, but usually it was for their own benefit.
Austria-Hungary was a good example of this. During the Great War, he'd always would send frequent letters and would invite you to a cup of tea at his place, sometimes you'd accept and would write back, mostly out of respect for his parents who you did have some fondness for. Of course, it usually would end with him trying to glorify the central powers and how he could help you get a foothold in Europe.
Again, you'd declined, even before the war, you would decline him. You just didn't want to get involved with the problems or matters of Europe. It was better to... wave at them from a distance, a small communication hub that you can easily end if the situation called for it. You couldn't risk bringing issues to your beloved people, they were fragile and sensitive after all.
Which was why they were so divided when you showed up for this particular meeting with the League of Nations.
Now yes, you did just preach that you didn't want any involvement, but this was different. You see, after the war, it was hard for you to get a grasp of things going on around you as the war had destroyed and fractures many ways of communication, on top of countries being to hesitant to talk to each other as well as being too busy rebuilding. You weren't stupid, sure you wouldn't be involved, but being oblivious can be a fatal error when you are a countryhuman. Your people rely on you to be informed and be able to plan for any situation that may arise.
So that's why you were here now, walking down an empty hall, feeling both physically and socially drained. You really should've mentioned you were just there to observe and nothing more because the moment you walked into that room, so many countries misread your intentions. Most of them had decided you had to be there to join pacts or alliances, that the Great War had to have freaked you out enough to seek out protection.
It did not.
You told them that, yet they didn't seem to care and managed to find a new battle cry for you;
Rising tensions and growing distrust.
Everyone was wary and worried about another conflict breaking out, particularly with a certain group now dubbed "The Axis", lead by none other than the German Empire's son. That one seemed strange to you, you'll have to make extra sure to avoid him.
And luckily for you there was no one else in the hall. You relaxed at that knowledge, you knew you couldn't run from everyone forever, especially one in particular. You'll give the man one thing; he was very persistent, more so than anyone else. Honestly you don't think he will ever give up, what's worse is that you have a harder time avoiding him as he's your neighbor. That's right, this neighbor just so happens to be a singular waterway away, none other than Eng-
