Chapter 3
The male can't keep his amusement to himself, as he watches his future beta walk around with her mouth agape in amazement. Her eyes are stuck to the tall walls infiltrated with intricate designs, and her feet sink into the velvet carpet meshed beneath them. The painted glass windows would capture her attention briefly, before her blue eyes would notice the majestic chandeliers that would swing low from the ceilings.
It was overwhelming for the poor thing, and Mikel couldn't help but chuckle at her.
The gnawing feeling of nostalgia was almost crippling to the young alpha male, causing his chest to stiffen and his throat to grow thick. He hadn't let himself think of this place in years, and his heart swells with juvenile memories, a small smile forming on his lips with random erratic memories that would come to front.
The first week after Tyler's passing had been awful for him. He'd been wrecked about it, not only having to hear the passing of an uncle, but then to have everything he knows snatched away from him. It's as if someone played a cruel joke on him. He'd prepared and prepared for the royal beta position, and just like that, it was gone.
He attempts to shake it off. He couldn't do anything about it now. He wasn't going to be royal beta anymore. He wasn't going to be by Jahari's side anymore. Those were the aspirations he had when he was younger, and it's unfortunate that they weren't happening, but it was the way of life.
That's what he kept telling himself.
The pair lagged behind the large group before them, the chatter and laughs going overhead the both of them. They eventually follow through into a large dining room, with a large oak table in the middle, stretched out across the length of the room with at least two dozen chairs.
Nothing had changed in the last almost decade. Nothing.
The beta falls unsure when everyone takes their place, nervousness getting the better of her wolf, who wants to do nothing but cower and fall to all the larger powers in the room. It's a quick reaffirmation from Mikel, who takes her hand and pulls her to sit with him. He sits next to his mother, and opposite Jahari and Akila. The beta is next to Adah, who sits opposite her half.
He can feel the eyes of the prospective King fall onto him, trying to figure out what sort of male he had been grown up into. They clash eyes several times, and awkwardness holds them both hostage.
"So Mikel," it's the King who speaks first, the table quietening down and all eyes falling onto him.
Mikel gives him a grin, the wolf in him at ease. He had nothing to fear, for he had done nothing wrong. He was being respectful.
"Lena tells me you're also due to take the Alpha position in a few days, just as Jahari would take his. How are you feeling about it?"
Mikel's eyes swivel to the male mentioned, who mirrored his mother, with tightly wound brown curls and warmer skin. He gives the male a grin, the knot of awkwardness loosening.
"I'm excited actually. It's something that I've worked towards for years, and it's something that I've prepared for fully. My entire life has been about this. It's the opportunity to carry out my family name, it's the chance to prove what sort of male I am, and what leader I'll be. I'm looking forward to it," he tells them, voice filled with confidence.
The future King watches with dark eyes, brows furrowed.
"I wish I felt the same," it's a dry chuckle that falls from Jahari, eyes casted downwards.
"Yeah, but he only has one pack. You've got thirty – an entire Kingdom. It's perfectly normal to be daunted Jay. And you aren't doing it alone. You have all of us. You have me. We'll do this together," it's his beta, Akila who talks to him. She's a blonde female that sits with a tall spine and daring eyes.
