Gojo looked so earnest that one moment you were almost reluctant to tell him the truth.
But you knew that he was not as weak as he often allowed himself to be around you, and that he would be capable of handling it. If he wasn't and didn't want to deal with it, he could always just pop out of your life.
You'd have to choose your next words very, very, very carefully.
"I.. have 5 days left. that's what I meant."
Some small, tiny part of Gojo knew what you meant, but the main part of him simply refused to accept it. And here, there were two paths he could choose to play.
He could pretend he didn't know what you meant, and get more clarification on his suspicion. He could play it safe.
Or he could let his fears and suspicions run rampant. He could play the dangerous route.
Well, Gojo satoru wasn't always the safest man alive, but he was willing to play it safe. Just this once. for you.
"And the exact meaning of that?" Gojo tilted his head, and you gulped.
Okay, maybe he had played the grey area route. He had taken the words of the safe route, and added his rampant emotions, facial expression, and reaction. Gojo made an entirely new route of his own; carving it out of oblivion.
On one hand, while Gojo was rather pleased with his ability to make his own path, you were sweating bullets, panicking eternally as to what you should respond with.
"Well, the exact meaning.." you hesitated. Gojo's sorrow had vanished then. It was replaced with calm; such calm that it was deadly. Deadly calm, like the tides of the ocean had receded into nothing but mere ripples.
After all, you had taken Gojo as the silent but deadly type when you had first met. ".. Is that I have a week left to live."
A thud. You flinched.
Gojo had told himself that he'd be calm, he told himself, he told himself. He knew. He knew what you were going to say, yet he-
Gojo took a deep breath.
He removed his palm from the absolutely obliterated nightstand table.
You didn't have your technique activated, but from the thud and the clatter that came after it, you guessed Gojo had destroyed something. To be honest, this was definitely not how you had expected him to react.
There was silence for a moment, and Gojo's presence was almost undetectable. In worry, you activated your cursed technique, partially because you feared for his emotions, but also partly because you wanted to make sure he hadn't simply teleported away again.
But what awaited your artificial gaze shocked you to the core.
Gojo was smiling.
Yet, this time, his smile was like that one of when he had first approached you.
"Why are you smiling?" you asked, and Gojo paused, before turning to you once more. The two of you sat face to face, heart to heart.
Gojo's smile only widened, even as tears began to drip down his face. You wondered if he even knew they were there.
"I'm smiling," he paused, and lifted his fingers to his cheeks. "Because we have 4 days to make the most out of."
As he wiped his tears away, you felt your own lips curl into a smile as well. He looked back at you with a clean slate, a bare face, devoid of the tears, yet the tear stains remained.
There was sadness in the air, but this time it was tranquil. "Let us treasure the time we have together."
And so you smiled also.
"Yeah. we do."
