I remember you in the courts of Sparta

veiled and silenced

and a room of suitors

the air smelt of sweat and wine

you were a prize among many,

yet costly

and only one could have you

perhaps they would shed a few tears

in short grief of losing you

their wives will kiss them away

once they reach home.

Lovely Helen,

they won't ask you

there won't be a promise to love you

but they will despise you,

when you run away.

Home to your lover

as they say

but you know he is shallow

he cowers at the sight of dead

and you never trusted him

you know better than to pour your heart out

to a man.

Do not come back, Helen

they won't let you live

your husband hates his possession taken away

your father will not protect you

for you are a woman,

a woman who chose to be free

the world can not stand a glimpse of you

where else would you go, Helen?

Troy will embrace your bones and flesh

so push thousands in the battlefield

they will fight until their last breath

and lay bleeding and gasping

thinking of their wives and children

crying as the dogs feast on them

Helen, your glimpse is still in my rotting mind

eyes glistening under the sun

your shining heels on the seashore

I know you,

and your raging soul

the storm beneath your quiet words

your hands reaching for spears as you danced in the gardens

a woman beyond beauty

Helen of Sparta,

the muses will sing of you for centuries

Your memory will fade with me.
