I was awoken by a loud knock on the door.
"Ada, are you ready?" It was Helen.
"Ummm, one second please!" I jumped out of the bed and over to the tall dresser, assembling an outfit. I quickly pulled a white shirt and black pants out of the dresser. I didn't have many options yet but I typically dressed simply anyways, my family had never been one for the lavish.
Just as I finished getting dressed Helen knocked on the door again. "All good yet?"
"Yep, coming out now, sorry!" I told her as I approached the door. I'd gotten better at lifting the heavy metal door, and had even begun to like how cool it felt on my warm hands.
As we walked down to the lab I attempted to strike up a conversation. "So, Dr. Cho, how did you start working for SHIELD?"
"Ahh there's a good story." She began
"I was working as a geneticist and the leader of U-GIN, a scientific research company. After the Avengers initiative was started, Fury decided it was a good idea to recruit a few people who could help determine how you all got your powers and how powerful you could be. He had come across my work years ago and had me work on small projects but never anything as big as when I was officially recruited."
"That's quite the story, what do you do when you aren't helping us?" I pried slightly, attempting to build some sort of relationship with the people I would be around for a while.
"Right now?" She looked around then leaned in to whisper to me. "Right now Stark and I have been tinkering on The Cradle."
We approached the lab and walked in. Over the last few weeks it had become a comforting sight, even at times relaxing. Here I wasn't meant to do anything except sit still, something I rarely did.
"Do you remember about three weeks ago when I took blood to look at your possible power set?"
I did.
"Of course, why?"
"Well, as with all tests run on the Avengers, I must report the results to the board before you, it's in the Avengers Initiative contract."
"Okay?"
"Well, the board came to a concenus last night about releasing your results and possible power set...they've decided that they won't release the results to you at this time."
I became aggravated , who was "the board" to tell me what I could know about myself. They didn't have to be me or live with the uncertainty of what I might do.
"So... when will they let me see them then?" I crossed my arms slightly, trying not to be annoyed towards Helen.
"I don't know, they've said they want you to develop and gain control over a select few of the abilities before they give you the entire span. They don't want to influence you."
"If they didn't want to influence me then why would they even hold that over me? You- they said I could have the results." I saw a brief trace of fear trace Helens face. Looking to the side into a metal tray I realized what was happening.
"May I be excused?" I asked, my voice breaking.
She nodded her head with a simple mmm-hmm.
I could feel her stares as I started to jog back down the corridor into my own room. I was lucky they put safety precautions on the inside as well. I bolted the door shut to keep anyone from entering as I calmly sat in the middle of the floor.
Bruce had begun telling me that I should try meditation when I'm upset in order to maintain some kind of control over the power.
As I closed my eyes I felt the power leak from my palms.
I'm somewhere sunny, a beach, no, a roof, and it's dark. I can see the stars. One hundred, three hundred, too many to count. There was a door to my left, a door I know I can't walk through yet.
The power continued to leak from my palms, I was oblivious until I opened my eyes. I expected to rise into a room just like I'd set down in, but as I looked up, I saw the stars. Billions, maybe more surrounded me.
I wasn't scared anymore. This was calm. I reached my hand up towards the sky in an attempt to grasp the low ceiling but my hand slipped right past where the ceiling should have been.
I jumped, launching myself into a small orbit, I floated myself towards the closest star, overwhelmed with the heat radiating from it.
I'm falling.
Down.
Down.
I've hit the floor.
"Hey kid? You okay in there?" Tony. Tony was outside now. Was he outside of this little universe I built? Or would I be able to see the door again if I opened my eyes quick enough.
I quickly snapped my eyes open to find Tony fiddling with the door handle. I unbolted the locks quickly, completely surprised by what had just happened.
Tony looked me up and down as if inspecting me. "Everything good?"
"I think so..." I scratched my head to make sure that I was still there.
"What happened? JARVIS detected some foreign disturbance in your room."
"I was in the sky, but also here, but not here, and not really anywhere."
"Okay, we'll, if you're okay now would you explain that all to Cho? She has all your information."
"Oh yes of course" I became flustered as I walked out of the room, stumbling my way through the corridor that used to not exist. I passed an empty room, that right there had been a star. I stopped briefly to touch it.
"Cho? Ada said something and I think it may be related to the discussion earlier."
I glared slightly at Tony, had the board given him permission to view my file? I hoped not.
I went into the room and started recounting the incident, no, the magic. I told her of the stars, the leap, and the fall back down. She grabbed a large folder off of her desk and walked toward me, quietly scratching off an item on a long list.
"Congratulations Ada, you have discovered individual reality manipulation."
"I'm sorry, what?"
I had bent small objects before, making them into what I needed in a pinch but I didn't realize I could bend my entire surroundings.
"Individual Reality Manipulation, if you concentrate hard enough on the place you want to see, you'll bend the space around you to create it. Of course it is individual so others will simply see you in whatever status you were before you began."
"Wow."
"That's one off a long list Ada, you're special."
