RiverClan

The air was moist and crisp, fresh, as rain pelted everything in sight. Mosspaw took another step. His paw sunk in the ground as fresh mud circled it. His fur was being pressed down in quick little streaks. "Is it time yet?" "No. Not yet." "We want to speak to him." "You have to be pat-" The constant voices of otherworldly cats dimmed into the background as the sounds of the rain came to the foreground. Mosspaw lifted his ears up to take in as much of the rain sounds that he could. His gaze flickered to his mentor Thornscar and he gave her a slight smile and a nod indicating he was ready. As they walked through the camp together cats would stop and take notice. The RiverClan camp exit was up ahead and Wadestride, Hazelwind, and Cliffshore were returning from a hunting patrol. Cliffshore was only a moon or so older than Mosspaw, but he and his sister Goldenreed had already received their warrior names. The dark brown spotted tom's dark blue eyes flickered as he saw Mosspaw and came over to him.

"Mosspaw you're out of the den! And with Thornscar? Does this mean you'll be back to training?" Cliffshore mewed. Mosspaw nodded, "Y-yes I'm at least going to try." Cliffshore's eyes narrowed slightly, "That's good. We missed you in training, and in general too. Do you wanna catch up later?" Mosspaw was taken back a bit. The brown tom had always been courteous to him, like any clanmate would, but they weren't particularly friends. "At least maybe he was and I just never thought of him as one since I was always with Flutterpaw and Troutpaw," Mosspaw thought. "Yeah. I'll see you later."

Mosspaw looked at his mentor and nodded ready to continue on outside the camp. They both picked up their pace and started to run. Mud splashing as they both ran, rain pouring and sliding off of their thick furs, the wind was hitting the brown apprentice head on. He kept his ears up since for the first time in moons he wasn't overwhelmed with voices all he heard was the sounds of RiverClan territory. His heart was pumping as he was running and he felt that he could be out of breath at any moment, but he kept pushing forward. This was the closest to free Mosspaw had felt since Flutterpaw had died, it was almost like he could feel her spirit running beside him encouraging him to race her. Mosspaw lifted his head to look up at the grey clouded sky rain falling on his face cool and rapid. He took notice that Thornscar was looking back at him smiling and gestured at him that they will be stopping soon. They both slid to a halt and were gasping for air.

"You keep up pretty well Mosspaw, I'm impressed with your endurance," Thornscar panted. She caught her breath and mewed, "I was thinking we do some hunting today within the territory then come back to camp in time for your friend's ceremony. " Mosspaw winced he noticed she said specifically they'd be hunting in the territory, not by the lake where most RiverClan cats fish this time of year. "It's probably for the best," he thought shuffling his paws together, "after all I nearly died last time I was at the lake. Flutterpaw did die.." His mind started to sink as his head started to droop. Thornscar flicked his pelt with her tail, "Where do you think prey will be residing right now?" The question snapped Mosspaw out of his trance. He had only hunted in the snow so he had no idea what to do in the rain. Mosspaw was getting nervous, but he told himself, "This is a new chance, impress Thornscar! Even if you're wrong try and say it with confidence!" Mosspaw sniffed, "It's hard to get any smell of prey, but in return that means they will have a hard time smelling me too! With this heavy downpour we may see a scurrying squirrel, but most prey will be in their dens at this time, so I'd say start where there's trees with larger roots for the possibility of a burrow!" Mosspaw smirked, "Nailed it," he thought. Thornscar's eyes were wide with surprise. "Good call Mosspaw! I can let you off on your own if you'd like and observe your hunting from afar or we can practice teaming up?" Mosspaw thought about it, but teaming up with Thornscar probably would be the best thing to do for his first time out in a while, and if he was lucky he could bring something to give to Troutpaw as a  gift.
