I had been told several times that Amber's birthday parties had always been a major event for our year group.

Not only did it always have new events to make it different every year, but according to gossip from the other girls, some crazy drama always ended up happening. Something that would be talked about for the rest of that year, and not be forgotten.

Apparently, last year, some older boys had been caught by Amber's parents with cigarettes in the bathroom, and there were some big protests among the party guests as to whether they should go home or not.

The year before that, someone dropped Amber's birthday cake, causing her to have a major tantrum which somehow led to a kind of food fight in the pool?

This year, I got to experience the drama first hand. In fact, I was actually caught up in the middle of it.

Everything seemed to have happened so quickly. It took me a few minutes later to comprehend it all. At first, I wasn't sure what to think.

But as I sat in Amber's lush bright living room beside Aki, and opposite Reuben, away from the excited crowd that had gathered around us, I finally came to my proper senses.

Amber's parents were asking us questions on the incident that had just occurred, and as I narrated the story from my perspective, a strange sensation of confidence seemed to wash over me.

I regretted nothing. And I told this to both of Amber's parents. I did something that I would never, ever usually do. I really did slap someone. But I knew I wasn't in the wrong here. And I was willing to stand my ground. Because in the end, it was all worth it.

After all, I had finally heard the voice of my best friend.

Reuben complained about being attacked for just having fun, but the adults weren't having it."I'll call my parents for this!" He yelled, "You can't just send me home like that! I was just chilling at a party, man".

"What you did was offensive, Reuben. Here, we don't see race, we see people for who they are". Amber's Mum said to him sternly. I furrowed my eyebrows at that. Wasn't race part of who we were? I didn't understand what she was talking about, but at least she was having a go at Reuben.

"Alright, fine! Then send everyone else at this party home, because they're all in on it, too". Reuben pointed a daring finger at my face, and I scrunched my nose in disgust.

"That girl, alright, came here UNINVITED. Amber would never invite someone like her and that fat kid. The fattie's not even from our school! Only Nakamura was invited, because Amber has the hots for him or whatever". He stood up, and narrowed his eyes, "You can ask anyone at this party. Nobody wants them here".

"That's enough, Reuben," Amber's father took out his phone, "I'm calling your Dad. Jemimah, Aki, you can go alright"?

"That's not even fair, though! Where's Amber? She'll prove it".

I stood up and looked at him, "Just leave us alone," I said before taking Aki's hand and walking towards the sliding glass doors which led to the pool in the garden.

"Is that a threat"? Reuben snickered, "You seriously think you can..."I shut the door behind us before I could hear him say anything else.

The people in the party stopped what they were doing when they noticed us. I noticed some giving us dirty looks, and some others just looking shocked. I felt the heat flush in my cheeks as I walked past them, and tried to ignore them. I had no idea how I was going to go back to school after this. I didn't need all this attention.
