The summer break started of pretty good.

Me and Beatrice both got part time jobs at Creams, a waffle and ice cream shop that gave us the best staff discounts, and it was soon our new favourite cafe. I don't know when exactly we'd stopped going to Milk, Sugar and Cocoa, but we gradually went there less and less. We had some great memories in that place- I thought maybe wed never stop going, and we'd continue going there until we grew older. But I guess that wasn't the case.

Aki had found a hobbie in binge reading, so spent a lot of time at the library when he wasn't harassing me and Beatrice at Creams.

Katie started helping out at a Youth centre, and apparently had gotten pretty popular with some of the other kids who had come to visit there from outside of town.

When we were off work, we'd walk around town and find random places to take a trillion pictures for this photo album Katie wanted to make.

Sometimes, it was even just me and Katie going out shopping together, especially since Aki and Beatrice seemed to be going out together on their own more often.

I didn't think things could get any better until the day, right in the middle of the summer, on a day I was off from work and working on an ice cream recipe with Katie, and I was hit with something unexpected.

"Are you sure this is gonna work?" Katie stared down at the ice cream mix that we were about to pour into the ice cream maker.

"Its worth a try." I said to her, just as we heard the door open. There were whispers from the corridor that made us both immediately pause in what we were doing.

"Jemimah!" It was Susanne. "Katie. Come here, please."

"Are we in trouble?" Katie asked, rinsing her hands in the sink, before heading to the corridor. I followed close behind her, thinking the same thing. But then when we were out in the corridor, I froze.

He was standing at the front door, pulling his suitcase inside, and taking off his cap. Then he looked up, and smiled, those familiar brown eyes glinting with excitement.

"Dad..." I felt my eyes stinging, as I ran over to him, throwing my arms around him. "Oh my God... oh my God, Dad..."

"Hey, Jems. My little Jem." He kissed my forehead repeatedly, holding me tightly, and resting his hand in my hair. "How are you doing, girl?"

"I can't believe you're back! Why didn't you tell me?" I was crying, now, soaking his shirt. But I didn't care.

"It wouldn't be a surprise if I did." He stepped back, eyeing me, his eyebrows raising. "Ayye. Not you growing almost up to my height in five months? Who gave you permission."

I laughed. "I always told you I'd be taller than you."

He shook his head, before turning to Katie and spreading his arms out to her. "Katie, my girl. What you doing over there?"

Katie smiled, walking over hesitantly before falling into his arms, wrapping her own arms around him tightly. "Its good to see you." She said, quietly, her grin getting bigger. "We've missed you."

"I missed you all more. I brought back a bunch of gifts for you two, as well. Let's get inside."

We helped him take his bags to the living room, and he opened up his suitcase. There was a box of beaded accessories for me, as well as a pair of Ghana flag earrings, and he'd bought a whole bunch of natural pampering soaps for Katie. He'd bought us both some personalised paintings as well, which looked gorgeous. Everything was so authentic. Everything was so Ghana. I missed it now more than ever.
