"I-" Y/N WHEEZED, RUNNING SHORT on breath. "Remind me why-" a cough that left her stumbling as they ran. "Remind me why we're actively looking for the demons?"

"Because no one else is," Sabito answered, his eyes staring determinedly ahead as he sprinted, leading their group of three. "No one should have to die in these trials - I'm going to make it safer for everyone."

"He's always like this," Giyuu cut in, somehow maintaining his constant bored-slash-indifferent tone even as he leaped like a deer over fallen trees through the dark. "Our teacher thought he was stupid."

Sabito let out a wounded hey, unaware of Y/N's gaze on him, raking over his face over and over.

What made you become the hero? When did you become so- so ...

So grown-up?

She groaned at herself internally, forcing a laugh at Giyuu's teasing and tearing her eyes away from the boy running beside her to focus on what was ahead. It had been a long, extraordinarily difficult road to even get to this Selection, and she hadn't done it to ogle a boy all evening.

However, there was something to be said about his violet smile, the way he tilted his head to the side with the motion in a way that made Y/N feel like the only person he ever looked at. Perhaps it was their past, perhaps it was their future, but either way, there was just something about Sabito.
