Never in my life have I been rejected before.
Until yesterday, that is.
Today is Friday, the day of the winter formal, and I still don't have a date.
I wanted to go with Erick, but clearly he had other plans.
Now, I don't have a date.
Suddenly, my phone rings, and I notice it's an unknown number.
I pick it up anyways, and answer.
"Jesy, it's me, Kyle. I know you don't have a date for the formal tomorrow." He says, cutting to the chase immediately.
"How did you know?" I ask suspiciously.
"I have my ways." He replies smugly.
I roll my eyes, knowing it could have been one of my dear friends.
"Whatever. Why did you call? And how did you get my number?" I ask.
"I have my ways..." He repeats.
I let out a frustrated groan.
"Kyle Swenson, if you don't answer my question, I'll kick you off my team." I threaten.
He chuckles.
"Okay, Okay. I called because I wanted to know if you'll be my date tomorrow since neither of us have one." He says.
"What's in it for you?" I ask, guessing he already knew why I might be interested in this offer.
"Well, Gemma and I broke up last week, and... I want to make her jealous. To let her know that I've moved on." He explains.
"What makes you think I'll agree?" I challenge.
"I know your motives, Jesy. You want to get back at Erick for rejecting you." He says.
"I'll be your date on the following conditions." I demand.
"What would that be?" He asks, curiously.
"Number 1: We stay purely platonic. No hard feelings and definitely, no romantic ones. Number two: Avoiding dancing with each other once we get there. Going with you alone is going to create unwanted rumors. And number three: Flirt only when necessary." I say firmly.
"Gotcha. What situations would you classify as 'necessary'?" He asks.
"When I tell you." I inform.
He pauses for a moment, to think about the deal.
"How Erick can like you, is a mystery to me." He mutters.
"What was that, Swenson?" I ask sternly.
"Deal." He says, ignoring my question.
I grin.
"Now, all I need is a dress. I'll probably wear a dark purple dress, but I'll let you know anyway." I say before hanging up.
Once I arrange for a dress, I inform Kyle and Jas.
Jasmine comes over immediately to help me get ready.
She knows I don't have a steady hand or the patience to put makeup on my own.
The four of us decide to go together.
The fourth person being by best friend's date who she still hasn't told me.
"Who's your date?" I ask.
A sweet, sly smile spreads across her lips.
"Jake. He asked me out yesterday after school. Just before you ran off." She says pointedly.
