History/Traumatic Event April's parents died when she was really young due to unknown causes. Their deaths resulted in her being put into the foster care system, where April spent the beginning of her life in a group home with 12 other children. The people in this home quickly became April's family, especially Amber Walker. April and Amber grew to become sisters to each other, and vowed never to be apart. It was on Amber's 11th birthday when this all changed, the day April decided she was going to bake a cake for her. With the help of her foster mom, Penny, and her foster dad, Andrew, April make a beautiful cake for Amber that she loved more than any present she got that day. However, after baking the cake, April didn't make sure turn the oven all the way off. This resulted in it exploding during the night and causing the house to catch on fire, killing everyone in it. Everyone except April, who was able to get out before the house was engulfed by the flames. The police later explained to her what had caused the fire, leaving April with the guilt of killing her only family. The only thing she was left with was the orange blossom bracelet Amber gave to April as a promise charm, symbolizing that they would never separate.
After her traumatic event she went from foster home to foster home, never really fitting in or having a true family. She never wanted to go through the pain of losing a loved one over again, so she shifted gears and threw herself into her future and occupation, wanting to be the best in her field. This way, if she was only focused on her work instead of finding that "one true love", she would never have that empty feeling that came when the person you're closest to is suddenly gone. She still clutches to the bracelet, however, not ever finding a way to let go.
