ethereal is pertaining to the hypothetical upper, purer air, or to the higher regions beyond the earth or beyond the atmosphere.
surreal is resembling a dream: fantastic and incongruous.
The world you now see is similar to that of surreal, terrifying, mesmerizing, nostalgic etc. Some things appear to be in cartoon form despite you still being in the "real world"
(kinda like the witch battles from Madoka Magica)
