Minato and Kushina are clinging to life after sacrificing themselves to stop the kyubi from killing Naruto.
"Naruto it's your mum here. I'm sorry we won't be there to watch you grow big and strong and take care of you an-" Kushina didn't finish as she died right there and then. Hiruzen ,who got there late, watched the whole scene unfold but was able catch Naruto's name.
