The following two days were weird for Mavis. Charlie was delighted that Bella was making friends outside of Edward, but it was clear the girl wasn't exactly his first pick. Sleeping on Bella's floor wasn't ideal either. Mavis began to wonder if this is how all sleepovers were. Movies made them seem so amazing, but this wasn't.
Mavis never had sleepovers growing up. For reasons that were self-explanatory. The Cullens were very strict and overly cautious. "I'm sorry about all of this," Bella spoke from beside her. The two were watching a football game Charlie had left on while he went to work. "I know this isn't ideal for anyone."
"It's okay," Mavis assured her. "This isn't your fault."
"Kind of is." She disagreed, Bella didn't ask for any of this.
"Kind of isn't." Bella rolled her eyes. "Who's outside now?"
"Jake and two others," she explained. "The Cullen's went hunting."
Mavis was still surprised about the alliance between the two. Jacob had managed to convince them to help. She suspected it was because of his feelings for the Swan girl. Whatever the case, Mavis was grateful. They were keeping her safe as well. "Do you think they're hungry?"
"Probably, they eat like wolves."
She chuckled at her comment. "Can I take them the subs your dad bought us? I can make us pasta for dinner instead."
"Yeah, I don't care." Mavis pushed up from the couch and headed into the kitchen. Pulling open the door, she began picking up the three sandwiches. "I'm going to put on a movie. Any suggestions?"
"Anything you want." She walked back into the room. "I'll be back in a moment." Bella nodded, already browsing through the channels for something to watch. Mavis stepped outside, already regretting not putting on a jacket. Trying to ignore the cold, she walked towards the woods. There was a figure standing by the trees. It was Jacob. He wasn't wearing a shirt, which didn't come as a surprise. "Hey."
"Hey," he waved at her.
"Is it just you," Mavis asked as she approached him.
"No," he shoved his hands in his pockets. "Paul and Embry are doing a walk around. Checking the perimeter for anything out of the ordinary."
"Well, here." She stuck out the sandwiches. "Bella said you eat like wolves. I figured you might be hungry."
Jacob smiled at her, taking the three plastic-wrapped subs from her hands. "That was kind of you."
"Well," she shrugged. "I'm a kind person." That caused him to laugh, his shoulders visibly relaxing. "I just wanted to thank you for doing this. I know you don't really like me or the Cullens."
"I care about Bella," he said. "Plus, you seem okay. Bella really likes you."
Mavis smiled slightly, surprised to hear that Bella spoke about her at all. "I like her. She's different than what I'm used to."
"Yeah, I can imagine." Jacob glanced over his shoulder, "you are surrounded by a bunch of cold dead people." Mavis knew Jacob wasn't trying to be rude, but these people were her family. "Sorry," he realized what he said. "That came out ruder than I intended."
"It's okay," she muttered. "I know how you feel about vampires. Most of them are the same with werewolves."
"Why aren't you?"
She tilted her head to the side, "what?"
"Why aren't you that way," he asked. "If they raised you, then I'm sure they had their opinions."
