Heading into the same diner they went to after finding out they were going to be fathers for the first time, Steve couldn't help but get a little teary-eyed. That felt so long ago. He had changed so much more than he could've ever predicted. And he wished that he could go back and tell his former self that things were going to get better. Beyond better.
As they seated themselves, the boys got distracted with the toy and candy vending machines. Steve promised, "You can get something after we eat, okay?"
"Okay!" Oliver easily agreed with Finn smiled up at him. Raising his little arms, Steve lifted the twenty month old up. Settling him on his hip and nosing at his soft blond curls. Easily scenting him as he followed Bucky to a booth.
"Hi, there!" A waitress greeted them, holding two booster seats, "I'll be right back with the kids' menu and to get your drink order."
"Thank you," Bucky took the booster seats from her while Steve assured, "No need to rush."
The young omega simply smiled before heading for the back of the diner. It had changed from the last time they had been there. The décor had a retro vibe with checkered floor and a jukebox at the end of the row.
"What dat?" Finn asked while Steve tried to sit him in the booster seat.
"It plays music," Steve answered.
Which caught Oliver's attention, "What does?"
"That big machine over there," Bucky said, pointing over at it. Having an even more difficult trying to get Oliver to sit than Steve was having with Finn. Of course, that was nothing new.
"Papa, song?" Finn asked, pointing in the direction of the jukebox.
Perhaps it was because Steve felt like celebrating, but he carried Finn over to the jukebox. And since Finn was getting to go, Oliver wanted to join. And since both boys were going, Bucky went too.
"Think they'll have our song?" Bucky good-naturedly teased, lifting Oliver so he could see the song collection that he didn't know how to read.
"It looks like they only have classics," Steve informed, looking over the choices.
"Always Be My Baby is a classic," Bucky quietly argued even though he loved classics so much that most of his playlists were more classic songs from the 50s and 60s than anything else.
Playfully, Steve rolled his eyes. Finding a song that the boys knew and liked, he paid the machine and chose the song. As soon as the song started, the boys started wiggling to get out of their fathers' arms. Steve chuckled and shook his head. Idly wondering if he should be embarrassed that his sons started dancing in the middle of the row to The Coasters' Yakety Yak. Then, he hoped that his kids never experienced that embarrassment.
Luckily, Bucky didn't have the same reservations that Steve had. Taking each of his sons' hands, Bucky started twirling them and hopping in the row between tables. Steve shook his head and reached for his phone. Making sure to document this moment just as he had with so many others. Hoping that with the proof of their love, it would linger just a little longer.
Noticing the waitress's return, however, made Steve herd his guys over to the booth that they had chosen. Putting Finn in the booster seat beside him, Steve slid into the booth so he was on the outside. Bucky did the same with Oliver, and pressed his foot against Steve's under the table.
"What can I get you started out with to drink?"
Not even looking at his menu, Steve said, "A water for me. Extra ice, please. Whatever juice you have for them."
"Apple okay?"
"It's perfect, thank you," Steve assured, getting the complimentary crayons open for the boys.
"Great," the waitress confirmed, pausing in her writing so she could look over at Bucky, "And for you, sir?"
"Apple juice works for me too," Bucky grinned, rubbing his foot along Steve's.
Nodding the waitress said, "I'll be right back with those and get your order."
"Thank you," Steve and Bucky said simultaneously. Looking over at Bucky, Steve blushed when his alpha winked at him. Who would've guessed that after five years together and three kids, he'd still get so flustered by the love of his life simply winking at him.
Redirecting his attention to the menu, Steve asked the boys, "What do you want to eat?"
"Chi-cheese fries!" Oliver said just a little too loud, causing some of the other diners to look at them.
Nodding, Steve decided, "You can share with daddy."
While Oliver cuddled up to Bucky, Steve looked over the items on the kid's menu. His kids weren't necessarily picky eaters, but they did have preferences. Excitedly, Steve informed the kids, "They have mini-corndogs!"
Getting the boys hyped, Bucky repeated, "Mini-corndogs?!"
Smoothing his hand over Finn's blond curls, Steve asked, "How's that sound, cookie? You want some mini-corndogs? It looks like they have peaches too."
Sticking his tongue out in his concentration as he colored the happy Mr. Hamburger, Finn paused. Taking just a moment to decide, "Yes."
"Well," kissing the top of Finn's head, Steve teased, "That was easy."
"What about you, squirt?" Bucky asked, coloring with the four year old.
"Um," Oliver tapped his dimpled chin, thinking. "What else is dere?"
"There's a cheeseburger, chicken tenders, or mac and cheese," Steve read aloud.
Nodding, Oliver was still thinking. Then, he asked, "What was the first one?"
"Cheeseburger?" Steve's brows furrowed.
"No," Oliver shook his head and pointed at his brother, "What's Finn gettin'?"
"Mini-corndogs?" Steve asked, looking over at his husband who was amused on his side of the bond.
"Yeah," Oliver decided, "I want them."
"Okay," Steve shook his head while Bucky chuckled.
When the pair locked eyes again, Bucky held his hands up in surrender, "You're the one who wanted all these kids."
"So did you, jerk," Steve threw a crumpled napkin at him.
Bucky couldn't argue with that, so he didn't. Instead, they told the waitress their order and laughed their fill as they ate. Steve couldn't wait for number three to get there and meet their brothers. And if they were anything like them, then Steve knew that'd be just fine.
